What do you recommend for a 5-string bass?

I want to start playing bass! Never really played one except for messing around with my brothers. I don't want to go crazy expensive, but I don't want to get garbage either. What 5 string basses should I look into? Would like to keep it under $800 if possible.

Spector. I'm using their 5 sting at the moment and I love it. I also have a sterling music man 4 string but I typically play the 5 string spector.

I tried some schecter basses over the weekend and was surprised they were nicer than a lot of the others I tried.

Man, I bought my LTD D5 for $560 in 2016. Now they are $900.. No regrets on this one. 34" Scale. It's a beast.

I just got a G&L Tribute L2500, I can't recommend it enough, one of the best imports I've ever had, WAY better than the Sterling I have. The pick-ups and preamp are the same as are in the US models. fantastic playing and sounding instruments. Can be had used in the $500 range.

As I always do, I recommend Music Man Sub Ray5:

IMHO the H would be just-fine - no need for the HH. The pickups are strong. The preamp is versatile. Best bang-for-buck basses out there IMHO.
You need to try out the G&L Tributes, I have the L2500 and I have a Sterling Ray34, The G&L is a whole lot better. The Sterling is a great instrument, but feels NOTHING like my EBMM Stingray, The G&L is closer in feel and tone to the US models than the Sterlings. ;)

I've not played any SUB or Sterling; just going by what I've gleaned from others over the years.

I have Stingray5 fretted and fretless basses and swear by them. Cost me an arm and a leg back in the day but didn't mind the long saving-pennies time 'cause I was buying "for life".

I have a 2011 Stingray, that has been abused in the best way, (was the touring bass of Pat Seals from Flyleaf), I picked it up for stupid cheap (less than $1k), it's a FANTASTIC player, the Sterling is a cool instrument, don't get me wrong, but unlike the G&L, nowhere near close to its US counterpart.

I picked up the fretted Stingray from a Cash Convertor (pawn shop) for cheap in 2002 and was sold. Ordered a fretless version to-spec, waited a year or two and paid top dollar but it was worth it.

I like the idea.

Can predict what'll happen 'though:
Guitarists will complain that they don't have a dedicated sub-forum, so we add one.
Then others will complain that there're too many sub-forums (peeps already complain about that).

So we can't win. I do like the idea 'though.

I don't get it, too many? how so? the more things we have to discuss and the appropriate place to do it seems like the right move, instead of having one forum thats a free-for-all and you can't find the subject you'd like to discuss. bunch of whiney bitches. LOL If they think this is bad, they should go look at the Talkbass forum, TONS of different forums for specific topics, and they keep them tidy, it's nice.

Their classsifieds section alone has 12 sub forums.

Agreed.

GearSpace and TGP for example have a shit-tonne of sub-forums.

I'm with you bro'. That's why I organised OTC with all those sub-forums and why I argued for the current status against naysayers...

Too many sections

Feel free to continue this discussion there. I'm going to be AFK 'til tomorrow; gotta help a dude out with his PS5 and direct-drive wheel settings...

Big fan of the sterling stingray basses myself, I've got a 5 string and I played with a guy for years who had a 4 string. I picked mine up from MF as a 'scratch and dent' that arrived in pretty much perfect condition.
