Does it get tones real close to the Mark IV/III? I don't play out so I've been toying with the idea of getting a rack setup. Maybe a Egnater M4 and a Tri-Axis, who else here is using a rack setup?

I know Mike Derks from gwar has used one for a long time.

Even though he plays mostly rhythm, i believe the leads on the Beyond Hell album were recorded with a Triaxis

Wouldn't say close to mark series or anything else for that matter. Has it's own vibe for sure. Recording triaxis was very effortless for me. It sounded great in many mic positions. It has a lot of compression and it's harder to get drier sounds out of it than mark series. It has KILLER leads IMO. I might be one of the few who prefers triaxis leads to Mark series.

All in all, I think triaxis is capable of amazing cleans, more than just decent slightly overdriven sounds, great chunky/beefy distortion and amazing lead sounds. I was extremely happy with mine until I needed a less compressed, organic, natural sound.

Hahah. Feel stupid now cause you summarized my whole post with one word although that wasn't your intention :D

The Triaxis is very nice to solo on. I cannot compare it directly to a MKIV or MKIII because I have not been able to play those amps back to back but the Tri definitely at least cops the vibe of those amps. The Tri is (can be) very saturated. It does have a more compressed feel to it as mentioned but if you're looking to shred it is pretty sweet.

I suggest the studio pre. My buddy has one and the thing sounds pretty damn good.

I've owned the:

Mesa Triaxis
Mesa Quad
Egnater M4
Egnater IE4
Climax S3
ADA MP-1
ADA MP-1 Classic
Marshall JMP-1
CAE 3+ with SE and Tranny mods
HK Access A
HK Access B
Rocktron Pro Gap Ultra
blue tube rack.

The Triaxis IS effortless to record. I found my CAE 3+ MUCH harder to record.

The Lead 2 modes of the tri are awesome, and similar to the quad. The cleans were EXCELLENT too. I didn't care much for any of the Lead 1 modes. not my style.

Overall, I like the triaxis a lot. It's one of the only preamps I've sold and REALLY missed.

I would like to buy another Triaxis at some point.

Right now though, I think the Egnater M4 is the end-all preamp. The IE-4 has so much mojo though, and I haven't heard an M4 module sound like CH2 of the IE4.

If you can find a triaxis in killer shape for around $900, I'd say it's a great buy.

BTW, I'm using a 2290 and Boss RCE-10 chorus for effects. I only really use delays, modulated delays, and chorus.

I use a VHT 2150 or a pair of Egnater seminar heads for power.

Racks kick all kinds of ass.

I only used 1 word because you pretty much covered what I would have said lol :D
Im a huge mesa boogie fan but Ive always found the Triaxis to be a bit to compressed sounding. (and I dig compressed tones lol :D )

i had my tri and put it up against both my III and my friend's IV, and the real amps were just beefier and more alive. the dynamic voice thingie didn't hold a candle to the onboard graphic on the heads.

but i enjoyed the heck outta my tri for many years...loved the squishy Ld II yellow and the rhy yellow hyper cleans w/effects. those were my two faves. lead II green was cool for ej/fusiony lead tones

lead 1 red recto tone was just stupid fizzy, as was lead 2 red mark III. in fact my old v2.0 POD had a better mark III tone than the triaxis did.

rhy green was pretty cool but nothing like a real fender combo, and lead 1 green was NOT carlos santana in a box. nor was lead 1 yellow robben ford.

now if mesa got off their butts and released a new triaxis with improvements to the channels i mentioned, it could be one major contender. you'd think they've had enough time to do so...

but then again tc can't seem to improve on the 30 year old 2290, which really makes no sense to me....?

it kills me when people rave about ie4 channel 2! the TOL 100 head i have is supposed to be fairly identical in layout to the ie4, but i just really don't get anywhere close to SRV texas blues tones from channel 2 which it is supposed to get.

I like Triaxis a lot. You can get great cleans, dirty, rhythm and lead sounds out of it. If you get one, then IMO, you should get a 2:90 to go with it...

Here's crappy digicamera recording of my TA + 2:90:

If you wanna know what it sounded in the room, add depth, warmth, 3D, huge size to the sound you're hearing. Also the digicamera's crappy mic and video compression compressed the sound a fucking lot.

I don't play blues.

Where does it say it's supposed to sound bluesy? It seems like it has too much gain to sound anything like SRV. I play more grungey stuff on that channel, like Juliana Hatfield.
