Hey guys I'm getting into some cheap beginner home studio stuff for Macbook recording and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with what mics would sound good for my setup:

Diezel VH4S
Diezel 4x12 Rear Loaded Cab w/ V30s
GIbson Les Paul w/ BKP Riff Raff AV bridge pickup / Mule AIV neck pickup (tuned 1/2 step down + drop D)

I play rock/hard rock in the style of Tool, APC, Circa Survive, Fair To Midland, Coheed & Cambria, Thrice, etc.

I was looking at the difference between dynamic mics and condenser mics. Please correct me if I'm wrong but it seems dynamic is better for miking amps? I'm not opposed to buying 2 mics if it really significantly helps my sound.

Also what I found is the most popular inexpensive ones to be the Shure SM57 or the Sennheiser e906. The Shure SM57 seems to color the sound of the amp more and make it punchy but I'm not sure a VH4 needs any help with that. The Sennheiser is a little more expensive but it is more flat/natural and has a better spectrum of sound and seems to get more of a "true" sound out of the amps although not as "punchy" as the SM57. I'm willing to spend more but I'd only be able to get one mic. I heard the PR20 or PR30 also kick some ass for recording.

I know this isn't the recording part of the RT forum but I figured maybe you Diezelheads with some experience could give a beginner some assistance! Thanks!

if you go for one mic, a Royer R-101 is great.
A classic studio combination is a a Royer R-121 together with a Shure SM57, but on itself the R-101 will sound like a R-121 with some SM57 blended in for girth.

If you' re on a tight budget, only a SM57 will do, just don't place to close to the center of the speaker.

I use a PR-30 Heil mic.
For interface I use apogee one.
For program I use garage band.

Here's a video for sound, it's not my best video as far as playing the song right because its a ruff draft, but the sound is great. I wouldn't go with the SM57. I did and took it right back!

I don't think you can go wrong with either the sm57, e906, md421 or the heil and don't let the price tag on the first two fool you, they are very solid and work really well; they are reliable workhorses. Unless you know what you are doing, start with one mic. The e906 worked well for me, it was really just a matter of pointing it somewhere on the speaker and it would sound good after a little tweaking.

And +1 on Apogee! Their stuff is sweet and works well with mac.

57 close in on the cone and a 906 or 421 a foot or two away (depending on volume) off center for some ambiance.

Sennheiser e906 and MD421, Shure SM57 and SM7B, Audix D4, and AKG 214 have been my choices for VH4 with V30-cab.
