I'm finally gonna learn and memorize all the modes this coming new year. No more 'faking' it  I'm 40yrs old dangit...I've been playing a waaaay too long to suck so bad  I've always been a Lynch fan and would love to incorperate some of his soloing style into my playing

Sounds like he's usually playing some kind of natural minor/blues thing 90% of the time. You realize, Lynch has no clue what he's playing in? He's musically illiterate... I'm serious. He just has a great ear.

Lynch is more of a jumbled up modes type of guy. Natural minor, dorian, pentatonic and the blues scale on their own or in any combination. It's the chords behind the solos that give the scales their sound. Play a G major chord and play a G major scale over it. It sounds like G major. Now play an e minor chord and play the G major scale over it. "Miraculously", you're now playing in E aolian ( aka natural minor).

It's so simple once you understand it, but it is so hard to explain.

There used to be a time, way back in my early days where I really wanted to learn that stuff. But I got tired of it quickly and just started playing. I learned more from my ears than I ever did trying to memorize scales and modes.

Yes! This is what I'm talking about. I'm a jumbled up kinda player. I have way too many years of bad habits to learn stuff proper. I figure since I have a good ear, I can learn some modes and just just use bits and pieces of them to make them sound 'musical' and not just like a scale...make sense??

What would be a good starting point? The pentatonics? Ionian??....

Pretty much...

Also it's what note you start with and end with... So taking Chubtone's example, if you start with E and end with E while playing the G Major scale over an Em or E5 power chord, you get E Aeolian. If you play D to D in the G major scale with a D Major or D5 power chord you get D Mixolydian.

So basically learn the major, minor, pentatonic, blues and harmonic minor scale. That will cover just about everything. :D

I'm musically retarded..i have also aspired to learn some theory this year....I myself have been working on some old Lynch tunes lately...Lynch is the reason I picked up the guitar years ago....my playing sucks but i'm trying. little by little i hope to continue getting better

+1 on that.

Natural minor and blues scale at the same time.

I dont think he is muscially illiterate? When Matt and I saw him at Sam Ash, he sure knew what he was talking about regarding music...then again he could have said anything since I cant read music

I think I remember reading an article way back where he claimed he didnt really have a lot of knowledge and was tryin to catch a few lessons at like GIT or something, but couldnt commit to a regular schedule an kinda had to back out of it. I get the impresson hes not completely shot, but he's not real well schooled in terms of theory...

I do not think that Lynch is a theory hound but he has that Natural Minor thing down hard. Damn the dude back in the day could bring the pain though

I learned the modes when I was 14. Anyways, it is more about knowing the right intervals to play than scales. Especially with rock music. George does whatever he wants, and alot of the times he comes up tops.

Yeah... that's kinda what I meant. He knows his way around. But not like Vai or Satch.
