What modules to cut through a mix - think I'm satisfied...

MkIV

I've been rehearsing with my new MOD50 with SL and Erect modules a couple of times now, and it really sounds great.

But the other evening during a serious jam the other guitarist in the band blew a tube in his amp and I loaned him my old Mesa MkIV head so that we could go on with the rehearsal. Now I wasn't really happy with the choice of modules any more - I just couldn't cut through without raising the volume to an obnoxious level.

What modules should I go for when I need to compete with my MkIV. I was thinking COD and EG5, but perhaps you have any other suggestions?

Well the problem there is the Mark IV has a ridiculous amount of midrange. Trying to cut through that amp might not even sound very good. I would think the SL would sound alright next to it, but I can see how the Erect would get buried. Unfortunately I think you'll have to dial in the Mark IV to work with the Egnater or just simply bring the volume down, the Mark IV dosent play well with other amps if you are using it in a hard rock type of situation.

The COD has a shit ton of mids and great harmonics, it's wonderful. That may be your ticket, but I think when you are working in a band ou should work with each other, rather than competing. You'll get better results rather than entering a volume war.

Contrary to some users here, the COD is as close to the Mesa sound as I've heard from any other amp. The only other gear I've been able to get that sound, is from an MI Audio Tube Zone.

I'd go with the COD, or with the Tube Zone on top of T/D.

I'm a Mesa fan myself, but after I found the Mod50, and saw I could get the Mesa sound out of it, my DC-3 is not that indispensable after all. But on the other hand I don't see myself without a Real Mesa at any point, If I sell my DC-3, it would be to get a Mark IV, or a V.

Carlos...

What are your SL settings?

The Mark IVs are mid-heavy and are very present in the mix.

But I cannot imagine you having probs cutting through with the SL. Erect, maybe, but SL should cut fine.

IMO, the SL and EG 3/4 "sound loud" to my ears.

I'm in a serious SL honeymoon. I just love it. :D

Well actually the SL module isn't that big a problem - I think it will cut through good if I just turn up the midrange.

It's the Erect that is the real problem. Basically I'm perfectly okay with not beeing the loudest of the two guitars when it comes to playing just rhythm guitars, but soloing is a real pain in the butt when I don't hear myself enough.

So basically I'm looking for a module to alternate the Erect.

And of course the problem will really solve it selve when the other guitarist fix his own amp and stop using my MkIV... it's just that he's really been on my back since the rehearsal and wants to buy it from me...

You could always try an eq pedal for leads, or a volume boost in the loop like the psionic audio "lumos". instead of being a boost for solos, it actually just takes down your volume a bit lower for your regular playing, and you disengage it for the volume boost. There are a few other companies that make something like that by the way.

What if you dedicate a channel to be your lead and turn up the volume on that channel?

so what about eg5? if it could be arranged, you could try mine out. it's in a box in gothenburg (i'm between rehersal periofd, gearing up for an album recording session while moving to a new home).

it's definitely not a recto, but a nice compliment rhythm wise i'd guess. i like it very much for metal chording, while i prefer my eg3/4 or even boosted bman for solos.

Update:

I have used the MOD50 at a gig for the first time (my wifes birthday party) - and it worked out just fine. I had no problems cutting through and the Erect sounds enormous! Wow what a big sound!!! The Mesa MkIV sounded so tiny in comparison - sure it's got an extreme midrange punch to it and can cut through just about any kind of mix, but the Erect is so full and warm and balanced sounding - I'm totaly blown away!
     :D ;) :)

The gig was recorded with a crappy video cam and theres one song available on youtube if you want to watch. The sound isn't very good. I'm the guitarist with the black ESP Eclipse to the right of the singer. I forgot to change to my solo setting on this song so the guitar solo is a bit low..

By the way; we solved the rehearsal problem with rearanging our rigs and changing places until we found a spot that worked out for all of us.
