Hey all, I recently bought an XTC 101b and it seems that the guy I bought it from was fiddling a lot with tubes. Can anyone tell me what the most popular set-up is? Pre-amp and power-amp?

Far as I can see, there are NOS tubes in the pre-section. But it sounds rather.... closed. Like someone put a blanket over the cab (Bogner 212 OS, 1/3 open, V30's). Power-amp are SED EL34's.

Thanks!

High grade Chinese 12AX7B or C in the preamp section (Shuguang or simply "Chinese", I use B or C), and, if this is an EL34 model, go with something along the lines of a JJ (I hate to recommend these but they're what's coming stock) or pull the bucks and get a matched quad of SED Winged =C= in there. If it's 6L6, can't help you - don't have a lot of knowledge of XTC's with 6L6's.

Hope this helps.

Usual recommendation is Chinese for Pres and =C=EL34s for Power.

I went with Dougs recommendation and got Ruby EL34BHT and Penta Select Chinese Pres. Best choice I ever made tube wise

I mix NOS Mullard 2 ei and chinese 8th in the cathode sections..

You might try also Sovtek 12AX7WA & 12AX7WB in your preamp. Currently I have NOS Tesla E83CC goldpins in V1, WA in V2 & V4 position, chinese on V3 & WB in V5-V6.

SED's in power amp are very good choice.

Regards, Andy
