What type of tubes should i get and where from? help please

Just wondering what power tubes should i get for my mod 50, i'm leaning toward 6550's, i like the idea of the extra headroom they give. I play in a hard rock band and we tune to drop A, I use the mhg and td modules. Any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Go for it man. Guys seem to really be diggin' the 6550's. Personally I like to get a few different sets and try them out. Start there though and see if you dig 'em.

I would highly recommend Doug at dougstubes.com. Just tell him what you got and your style and he can get you what you need. You can get them for high headroom as well.

+1 on Dougs tubes. I get all my bulbs from him, highly recommended.
 
I've gotten all my tubes from thetubestore.com for years and years. I've rarely had a bad tube w/ them.

On the note of what tubes to get, I'd highly recommend Svetlana 6550 tubes w/ the Mod50. It's my favorite tube by far for the Mod50. Has the high headroom you want, great punchy lows, sweet buttery mid-range, and sparkly chimey top end. I've been using the Svetlana 6550s for about 6-7 years and have had great luck with them. Really a reliable tube that lasts a long time. As far as preamp tubes, the Chinese 12ax7a's and the Tungsol 12ax7's have been my preamp tube of choice. I use the Chinese 12ax7a's in m EG3/4/5 and SL2. Use the Tungsol's in just about everything else. I've been digging the Jan Phillips 12at7's in the COD though too. Lowers the gain a bit, giving it a bit more headroom. Great setup!

Hey Eric, do you use the AT7's in V1 or V2 or both?? I've got some 5751's and some AT7's lying around and will try them in my COD. You (and the others) were right, what a fun module that is!

I've been trying both the 5751's in V1/V2 and 12AT7's V1/V2. Haven't mixed them yet :). But it was really cool w/ the 12at7s's in V1/v2. Really opened it up a lot, gave it a bit higher headroom. Really could nail those SRV dumble clean tones. Especially using 6550s, since that's what SRV used in his dumbles.
 
i think i'm gonna go with the 6550 svet's, thanks for all the info
