All my modelers speaker sims leave something to be desired. Some more than others. Haven't tried out the ENGL speaker compensated out, the H&K Redbox speaker compensated out yet though (I have both on an SE and a Triamp MK II), so I don't know how those are. The supposedly godlike Voodoo Lab Preamp's direct outputs were much worse than the super cheap, Super G Speaker Sim on the V-AMP PRO. Give me opinions of stuff you've tried. Forget about the modeller cab sims, they are TOO easy to tell direct sound. They missing the magic of the inch or two of air in between the speaker and the mic I guess

Best resuluts I use to get from the speaker sims in NI's Guitar Rig, but then I modelled my own set-up with Waves Q-clone which I can live with happily.

Ivan,

The best direct results I've gotten have been using either my PodXT or any other amp head with a preamp out...and using impulses. Fantastic results...Don't forget to turn cab modelling off on a modeller though. The andy sneap forum guys have some great impulses. User "Guitarhack" specifically has some nice ones.

Mine was with my Voodoo Valve. Thing recorded pretty damn good direct!

guitarhacks impulses are all missing. I was wanting to download them the other day but all his links are dead.... do you happen to have them? if you do could you post them up? :)

the best tones i ever got direct were with a Tech 21 GT2 pedal, and i got the same results from the tm10 which is basically that pedal in an amp form.

I can't post them right now, but if you get onto Gavin's FTP server they should be on there for download!

I get some pretty darn good recorded tones from my Axe-FX...although I play like ass, so there's a tradeoff to be had!

The best I can recommend (a slight variation on what some others have already said) is impulses. In specific, feeding my favorite head into a HotPlate set to load and taking the line out of that straight into my interface, throwing one or a few impulse files on it and its nearly 100% set. EQ/Compress/Verb as usual when recording and I get my amps tone very close to how I hear it in the room. All you need to get this done are a hotplate, a convolution reverb plugin (I use voxengo pristine space), and a set of impulse files (look up Guitar Hack's on the Sneap forum or Mood Bender's on here or HC). You can even make your own with another plugin, so you could capture your favorite speaker/mic combination and have it available to you for silent recording at any point in time. Really awesome stuff, IMO...

Anybody have a link to a tutorial on installing and using impulses?

Ed D, you modeled your own tone? How the heck did you accomplish that!?!

Waves Q clone...sends out a ping through your hardware, measures the frequency curve and done.
So I just pinged the Flexi power section into a V30 miked with a 57.

its not hard, just get voxengo boogex install it to your vst directory. and it can then be used as a plugin. Download some cab impulse files and put them in a folder somewhere. Launch the plugin and apply it to a direct preamped track.

Whoa..............

Ed, how the hell do you just move from one product to another so easy or so it seems??? YOu can go from amp sim software to another....from an Eclipse to G-System.......is it you just understand the widget as a whole or much work??

Oh yeah, I was listening to THD clips on the sight and was wondering what is the best product that Chris Nix has?? Do I have his name right? I really dug his work at TM last NAMM and his clip was awesome as well.

What do I do for living Scott? I deal with tones...you spent enough time with anything it becomes second nature. Just knob tweaking.
As for Chris-and yes you got his name right-you neab what does he have released? Nada, he's finishing up a record, should be doen end of the year.

Yeah that was kind of a dumb question :) I am still pretty impressed though, deploying different rack pieces from different makers is some tough crap esp for a guy like you that knows exactly what he wants.

Cool, post when he releases it if you remember, I really like his stuff even if he is a lefty :)

what makes for a HUGE guitar sound for me is to take a page outta Randy Rhoads way of doubling and triple tracking as well as making sure the tracks are recorded hot enough. I used a J-Station for all of the cheap ass recordings here except the Jeff Beck tune...was experimenting with a hot mod and yellow jackets in a 2203
