what's the current equivalent to the TOL?

I love my old MICA TOL100 but it's just not really roadworthy anymore (though maybe will be again if I ever get it back from Dave at rack systems...)

in the meantime, or if it happens again, what is the modern equivalent of those tones? I've played the renegade and tour master and neither really did it for me the way the TOL does.

And it sounds like modular stuff is now hard to come by... plus I don't know which modules (if any) are clones of the channels in the TOL.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

I think the modular is your only bet. You'd be looking to pick up the following two modules:

1.) EG3/4
2.) EG5

If you can only get one at a time, get the EG3/4 for your TOL tones.

BTW, Bruce is currently finishing up a brand new run of M4 preamps. PM him if you want one - there might be one or two left.

Thanks for the input... in doing a little research it appears that there are "old" modules with only 1 sound in them, and "new" modules with 2 sounds in them.

But what about the M4 chassis? Is there an older version that only handles the "old" modules and a newer version that will handle the new modules?

It does look like the newer modules are pretty easy to find, but I'd like to understand the history and compatibility a little better before I make the leap..

Thanks.

Normally the Egnater branded ones handle two modes, the Randall ones handle one of them. You can have the RM100 modded for being able to adress both tones, it's a mod that Egnater and/or Jeff Hilligan used to do at least I believe.

The early Egnater M4 preamps and Randall RM4 preamps only handle single channel modules. You can load a dual channel module in them, but the preamps themselves will only recognize one of the channels in the modules (I think Channel A).

The second version of the Egnater M4 preamp was for dual channel modules. This is the version I recommend you look for.

The early Egnater and all Randall modules only had a single channel. The later Egnater modules had two channels. Bruce is still building the newer, dual channel modules, which you can special order direct from him.
