But seriously, after figuring out the issue I had an issue with my hum trimmer pot, an EL34 just hassss to go bad... Tube Depot to the rescue, I went big time and am trying some Black Sable EL34's, I'll let you know how they turn out! I swear if anyone could bring back the old tube factories that supposedly made these tubes which were military spec, lasted 10x longer and sounded better I'd be really happy. I have the WORST luck with power tubes, honestly!!!

I've had great success with the Tung Sol brand tubes - for all applications - EL34's as well as full stack in the 12AX7 preamp department of a couple VH4 and VH4S's. For what it's worth.

Magic Parts has a new EL34BHT, reliable and very good sounding ;)

Thanks all :) Hopefully I'll have some change of luck this time around!!!

Where can I order this tubes in Germany? Did you compare it to the TAD EL34? For example this one:
http://www.tubeampdoctor.com/product_info.php?cPath=21_60_61&products_id=343
The time for a tube change is near, the ones inside my VH4 do their job for more than a year now and I think they loose some clarity and I have to push the presence more and more (I use ear-protection so it isn`t my ears   ).
I do mainly rock like this (http://www.hartmut.roehnert.com/media.html)
I will thank you for a suggestion!

IMO, the tube Peter suggested is a better tube. Just my opinion.

I too am looking to replace my preamp tubes, and of course would like to follow Peter's advice. However, it is suggested to contact Magic Parts, and they don't sell to the public. I have contacted them to try and find a dealer, and will post what I find. If anyone has any suggestions beforehand, please feel free to post.

I am located in the US, BTW.

Regards,
Stu

In the future I will have a good stock of Diezel tubes for those needing them in the USA.

This is great to hear, and I was hoping you'd say this. Can we convince you to do this now? If you had an account with Magic Parts, then all us US folks could have access to the tubes that Peter recommends. If you see this not happening for a while, perhaps you can suggest a vendor for the time being?

Stu

I am working on this and about 500000000 other things at the moment ;) It will happen shortly, please be patient. I will post up all details when this is ready to roll out. It shouldn't be too much longer.

If you are in dire need of preamp tubes, i grabbed a few from Cryoset in California. The gentleman there was more than helpful & i got them fast. the tubes he has are cryogenically frozen (please see previous posts about this) and they are working wonderfully in my Herbert..and the $$ is very similar.

No you don't; I have the WORST luck with power tubes!

Recently they've all been behaving, but I'd had a couple of pre tube faults instead! Diezel were ready to take the amp in to check it (which would be inconvienient to say the least), but it's now on parole after it's second dodgy pre-tube in 2 months, travelling anywhere on top of 2 bean-bags to make sure it's definitely not being bumped slightly when moving, even though it's never be bumped noticably and I never had any unusual tube problems until the last few years!

Fingers crossed for the super-careful transport method though! :)

Peter,
I have a quad of EL34-BHT tubes going into my VH-4 this week!

One way to get around dodgy preamp tubes is to buy them matched and balanced triodes. This adds an additional 2 or 3 bucks to the cost of the tube, but it means they have had to take at least a second look at the tubes on the tester. I have been buying mine at Tube Depot (http://www.tubedepot.com) and so far, I haven't lost a tube yet. This set of preamp tubes has been in my VH4 for about 9 months now and no problem.

My two cents for what its worth (2 cents)....

Steve

I've had great action with thetubestore.com Real good communications with the peeps that work there and they're extremely accommodating and stand behind their products. I had some strange stuff happen with a quad set of tubes that was ENTIRELY my fault. Before I knew it was my fault, I expressed my concerns to them and they just said to let them know what tubes they were and replacements were en route. Now, I did come clean and told them it was my fault and not to send any extras - I'm honest - but the fact they didn't throw down a stink was to me, a good sign of their being a solid company to buy valves from.

That's my $0.02 worth....So thus far we're at 4 cents. Coming along nicely, just another 499,996 cents and we can look at another custom LP :)

So what's the verdict on EL34 BHT anyone using 'em except Peter D obviously :)

I feel like I will have some time end of next week to revert my Einy back to EL34s (and tackle the problem with Channel 1 lid not firing up, if it's something that I can do of;course :) ) ?

Niki

P.S. I did bite the bullet and ordered a quad of EL34BHT anyway :) Couldn't wait until somebody reads the question :-)
