I'm thinking of getting another amp to run with my Herbert. I had a VHT pitbull and liked the mix, but had to sell it a while ago. I was thinking maybe a VHT UL 100 but now I'm thinking to try a Marshall. I play mostly hard rock..
Which Marshall should I be looking at? I had a TSL 100 a while ago and never really liked that amp much.
I guess I really don't know much about the different Marshall models.. :scared:

Superlead. Or, if you want a master volume you could go for 2203 from like... '79 or '80. Metro or Ceriatone have clones for good prices.

This is my opinion, but anything after the JCM800 era sucks. You have a few choices of good Marshalls (stock, not talking about hot rodded): Super bass, Superlead, Dual input JMP (2203), and the JCM800.

Out of those I'd go with the Superlead (if you're not worried about volume) or the 100 watt master volume 2203 (like what Metro and Ceriatone offer).

Marshalls are great for running with a Diezel. They compliment each other well since they each focus on different areas of the mix. Marshall has a lot of upper-mid bite and highs, but lacks lows. Diezel has a lot of lower-mid emphasis and a good deal of low-end. Seems like a great fit. Like Reese's Peanut butter cups. :)

I don't run a Marshall, but do run a Mark IV with my Herbert.

I've run a bunch of different amps with my VH4 and the best combination I've found so far is a Marshall JVM410H into a 425A cabinet, OD1 channel, orange mode, mixed with Channel 3 on the VH4 running into a Fender HM412. I've had a hard time finding out what speakers are in the HM412--best information I've found is that it's a 120-watt cabinet, so the speakers are 30-watts each, and I believe they are some brand of Eminence or Eminence/Fender joint venture. There's no markings on them and very little information (that I've found) on the internet. If anyone has any info on this cabinet, I'd love to here about it. It's a slant 4 x 12 covered in gray fuzzy tolex.

Cheers,

Any chance you have any recordings of the two together.

Thanks for the replies..
I'm going to try to find a Super lead to try out
I've never messed with any Mesa amps so now I'm curious.

Maybe I should change the title of this thread to What amp mixes with a Herbert well.

Mesa and Diezel are going to fight for the same space in a mix. Marshall + Mesa = good. Marshall + Diezel = good. Mesa + Diezel = bad. You need two amps to compliment each other, not fight each other. But try it and see...

That makes sense.. Thanks
I was checking out your clip in the other thread, Great tone man!
Do you do any Tool covers in a band?

Honestly, none.

I'd buy a friedman Marsha, Fortin modded Marshall or any other hotrodded one.

I had a JCM800 1959 non master volume, just like the plexi and hated the thing. You had to put everything on 10 to start talking. Check out the vintage modern modded by Fortin as well, Brad (rareguitar) posted some of his clips in a post just yesterday, amazing Marshallesque tone!

Hey Base341, I had a chance to try the Marshall JVM205H which is 50 watts and the Marshall JVM410H which is 100 watts.
I was surprised, but I really liked the 50 watt better than the 100 watt, sounded a lot bigger and tighter. I was pretty impressed with how good it sounded.

Thanks :) I've done Tool covers in the past. But I'm currently not in a band. Too much on my plate at the moment. If you like Adam Jones' sound, he runs a '76 1959 JMP Super Lead with his Diezel. You can get there with either a Super Lead or probably with any of the other similar 1959 circuits, or if you don't want to have to crank the thing up to 10, a 2203 (JC800) master volume. Just go easy on the gain and crank those mids. :)

A Friedman modified Marshall would be good as well. You could either buy one of his amps or get a stock Marshall and have him mod it to your liking.

There's a video floating around on YouTube of James Lugo blending a Diezel and Friedman Marshall together. Sounds great!
