Which module would get me closest to Nuno's guitarsound on the album "Waiting for the punchline"?
He used a Fender Vibroverb on that album so my guess is that the T/D module might do the trick... Any thoughts on that?

Im assuming you are talking about the majority of the tracks like "Naked" and "There is No God'. If so, you could probably get close with channel B of the T/D. Make sure you are using a bright guitar too. That Bill Lawrence bridge pickup he uses (L-500L) is like an ice pick factory. The N4 is a bright guitar but even more so with that pickup.

If you are talking about Evilangelist, its EG5 since he used a Soldano on that track.

If you're ever thinking Extreme I and II stuff, my vote would probably be SL2.

I think the real secret to that Nuno sound is an awful, awful, trebly, steely, metallic sounding BL XL500 bridge pickup. ;)

Just kidding, I heart Nuno. And the tones on Waiting for the Punchline are great. Really raw sounding record. T/D might work well if you crank the D, and maybe boost it with something in front too...

My dream is to be able to play the whole solo from "Play With Me" from start to finish. No lie. So far, that goal has not been achieved...

The "Punchline" tone is one of my favorite sounds ever. I went as far back in the day to get a Vibroverb Reissue & plugged into my 2x12 Recto. Unfortunately, you had to dime the whole amp just to get close to that sound and it is L-O-U-D. What a sound, though.

I have the T/D module and tried for about 2 minutes to dial in the sound before checking out the rest of my modules. My benchmark is the tone in "Hip Today." I think with some tweaking the twin with some gain might get you close, and also try that with the deluxe, as well.

I think Nuno used a Vibroverb reissue into a 4x12 on most of the tracks (EWSEthan is spot on about the Soldano), and he used a Twin on "There is No God."

Thanks for reminding me to check more into that. If you get a good tone, please let us know the settings and even a clip if you can!

Mine too! I can actually play the full solo................................at 1/2 speed!! :D

Mine was to play the solo from Beat It at a show and do it "well". Achieved that a few weeks ago. I've decided to never set a new goal. I'm happy with where I'm at now.

BUMP. Thought I'd chime in here. I'm thinking about possibly getting my T/D modded, if possible, into something that can pull this tone off. It's a brownface Class A Vibroverb into a Marshall 4x12.

If I could get anywhere close to the tone on "Cynical," or "Hip Today" that would

EG5 totally here. Super tight, thick tone...with an edge on the top end...totally 3 sides IMHO.

That's my personal favorite Nuno tone anyways.

Pretty sure it was actually a Vibroking, not a Vibroverb!

let me see if i can give you some answers. guitar playing technical answers aren't really my forte...but now that you mention it, you're right...he does make a similar sound of "comfortably dumb" as was in "there is no god," in the verses. interesting observation.

the vibroverb was an original, not a reissue, if i remember right. we had two of them...that was the only one that sounded like that. i believe it had a microphonic tube...which was part of that peaky, saturated sound. if my memory serves me correctly, i don't think he was using an overdrive or pedal unless for an obvious octave or phaser effect. when the tube tied, i don't believe the amp ever sounded the same, hence it never showed up again. i'm pretty sure we used it on some of schizophonic, too...it (like nuno) had a very inimitable sound. i'll have to check out the session notes (which i believe i may have) and get back to you on what the actual front end was before the amp...

as far as "hip today," i do know the sound you speak of...i remember watching him play it when we were recording it...but again, even though i spent more time watching nuno play guitar than i did watching tv with my wife...hard to remember what he did =) you may want to look at some old guitar player issues and see if there's any revelation of the "tricks." :)

thanks for your kind words...

i always though that his favorite amp was a jcm800 that he boosted with a rat distortion box.

i am pretty sure that the current nuno amp that randall makes was designed by egnater but based off the jcm800 with rat boost circuitry.

so my vote would be sl2x with a rat for boost for the nuno sound, with the lawrence pickup of course!
