Any first tour UK or Japan stuff. Pasadena Civic '77 and Magic Mountain are great.
The LA Forum Fair Warning tour stuff is awesome.
Pasadena Hilton is pure fun ("Van Halen at the Hilton? The flyer said no jeans, I didnt' have a thing to wear".)

Pasadena Civic 77! I wore that out when I was young!

Gazzaris Dance Contest freaking RULES!!! Anymore boots out there like this where they are basically slinging covers all night?

Oldest Gig at Gazzari's, Lil' Ol' Covers Band From Pasadena, etc.

vhboots.com has 'em all listed.

Goldenwest - which is also sometimes called "Eatin' Schenker for Breakfast" Some covers, some originals...

it's called Nightmare Before Halloween and/or Die Laughing, it's a soundboard recording from '78 and it THE best sounding bootleg of the classic era

Best Classic VH Boots: A Guide
Written by TwoFoolsAMinute

So you want to collect Van Halen but don’t know where to start. My first reaction is to say get everything you can. But here are a few choice shows for your enjoyment.

Club Days:
These are based mostly on the sound quality. There is a lot of variety in the club shows. You really should get all of them. They each offer something great, cover songs, originals, early versions, etc.

Pasadena 5/29/76 SB "Civic Disobedience" Master SB 1CDR Great soundboard from Wooda’s masters. Many VH originals that didn’t make the albums.

Hollywood, CA 6/29/76 "Starwood Sensation" Master SB 1CD Similar to the 5/29/76 show. Lower sound quality, but more complete. Good stereo soundboard from Wooda’s masters.

Pasadena 10/15/77 "The Nightmare Before Halloween" 1CD Another from Wooda’s Masters. VH thought this would be their last show before the first world tour and the setlist is pretty much the same as on the 1978 tour. The quality on this perfect. The best sound quality of any VH Bootleg and the playing is magnificent.

1978
Ipswich, England 5/28/78 SB 1CD: Considered the best sound quality of the recently surfaced UK “Soundboards” Debate still rages as to whether they are soundboards, but the sound quality is very good. The performance is average for 1978…which is pretty good.

Tokyo 6/17/78 "Live In Tokyo 1978" 1CD: This is the real gem of 1978. The Japan tour gave us the longest sets of 1978 and this audience recording is near perfect. Great setlist. Great performance. Great Recording.

1979
Fresno 3/25/79 1st gen 1CD: For the Van Halen II tour, look no further than this first show of the tour. These guys were ready to get back on the road. Probably the most energetic, all out performance VH ever turned in. Setlist is unique for 1979 as they hadn’t settled on one yet. Get the 2006 1st Gen Transfer.

Tokyo 9/13/79 2nd gen 2CD : A longer 1979 show with some special treats including a changed-up and extended drum solo, cool guitar effects especially during "Light Up The Sky." an extended "Feel Your Love Tonight." And “Growth" is played prior to "Atomic Punk" at the end." Sound quality is distant, but the performance is great.

1980
London 6/23/80 "1980 London Invasion"1CD: Incomplete audience recording missing You Really Got Me at the end. But, this is likely the best recording from 1980. Honorable Mention for the next night 6/24/80 London. The other standout bootleg from this tour.

Largo, MD 5/1/80 SB 1CD: Only circulating Soundboard from 1980. Sound is very clear but very hollow and flat. So, depends on your taste. Some prefer Audience recordings over this, but this is probably the most common 1980 show in circulation.

1981
Providence, RI 5/15/81 2CD: The best sound quality of the 1981 tour. Includes the only known performance of “Lucille”. This is the first show of the tour, and the band is not yet at the level at which they would play later in the tour. Get the 1st Gen.

Los Angeles 6/19/81 Aud 2CD: This is a favorite for this tour because the band was having a very good time and were likely partying pretty hard before the show. A fun listen with decent sound quality.

Many of the 1981 shows are somewhat similar in quality and excellent performance. Best to just get them all.

1982-1983
Largo, MD 10/12/82 Video SB "Live in Largo '82" 2CD: Fantastic performance from the best tour. Full pro-shot video of this show is available as well as the video soundboard audio. The band is on fire this night.

Sao Paulo, Brazil 1/21/83 Video SB 2CD : This is the best setlist of any Van Halen show. A great cross section of their career and some covers, jams and surprises. This is also a video soundboard, but is pretty rough sounding. Full pro-shot video is available as well as audio. This is the pinnacle of Classic Van Halen.

Montevideo, Uruguay 2/5/83 SB "The Full Montevideo" FM 2CD: If the Sao Paulo 1983 show sounds too rough for you, this bootleg offers a somewhat similar show, though incomplete, in much better quality. Sometimes inconsistent, but most of this sounds fantastic.

1984
Quebec City 4/21/84 1st Gen Aud 2CD: If you’re looking for the best 1984 recording, look no further than this. It has the only 1984 performances of “Ice Cream Man” and “Summertime Blues” and the only 1984 show that strays from the typical setlist. It also happens to be the best sounding recording or close to it.

Madison, WI 7/3/84 (Master>Dat) Aud 2CD: Typical 1984 setlist. This is another show often mentioned as the best sounding 1984 recording.

Yeah, that's a good one. I still think it's a few pieces of different concerts, but their version of Rock n Roll Hootchie Koo is awesome. "didn't have a thing to wear" cracks me up!
