Which VH4 version sounds best?

Hello,

I am thinking it's about time for me to become a Diezel user again; something about these things I just can't get away from! I'm going to go with a VH4, but I've heard some talk about how the amp has been revised over the years. My questions are: what are the tonal differences, how significant are they, and which version would you recommend?

What I'm really trying to find out is if it's worth spending the extra $1000 or so for a new head, or if I'd be just as happy with an older version from the used market. I know I don't get the warranty for a used one, but $1000 should keep me going for a while.

Thanks!

You might want to send a PM to JoeyTPG - he's got an '01 that Peter updated to '09 specs.
From what I've heard, the updates make Channel 3 sound more like channel 4 - tighter and higher gain.

Although there aren't any "revisions", per se, there have been small but significant changes to the circuit throughout the years. I've got an un-modded '01, and channel 3 has an almost Bogner-like feel...it's darker and spongier than channels 2 and 4 - it nails the Steve Vai sound EASILY. From everything I've read, it seems like the newer VH-4s have the most uniform tone across all 4 channels, but the older ones are more versatile.

Alright, here's the deal, there have not been any "revisions" per se. Peter just changed a few components over the years and the result is a post 2007 VH4 with more gain and tighter low end. It's not a Revision B, or anthing like that. My amp is a 2001 model and I had it for 3 months or so before sending it to Peter and getting it up to date.

After the amp came back to me, it had more gain (more as in before the update, channel 3 with tha gain MAXED was equivalent to having the gain knob at 3:00 after the update, same with channel 2) and the low end improved a lot, before the amp was just a bit too bass heavy and I could not set the bass know and deep at 12:00, it'd be just TOO MUCH BASS and a bit flubby at that point. Now I use the bass knob around 11:00 - 2:00 and deep at 12:00 and it's tight as a virgin's twat!

Before the update was a GREAT GREAT amp, after the update was AWESOME/UNREAL

Now, I don't know what the hell peter did, so don't ask me hehehe I'm just telling you what changes I perceive. :)

Hmm....My VH4S is a 2001 model also, would like an update too. How did you send the amp to Mr. Peter?

Cheers.
