Just picked up a Soldano x88 (Thanks Tone Jones). I am looking to purchase a VHT power amp. Anyone have any input on the VHT 2150? I heard the older (larger) ones are better.

Looking at my 2150 -
My back aches thinking about moving it

You are all wrong!

The correct answer is all of them. :D

VHT Classic and 2150

Sure, great amps, no doubt. But unnecessary. Too much weight and size.

There are plenty of 2U amps that will more than adequately get it done. There's no need for 4 rack spaces, 100 pounds and a $2K to $3k outlay.

I'd put a VHT/Fryette 2/90 or 2/50 or a Mesa 2:90 under that X88R and not give it a second thought.

2150 sent the 2902 and 2502 packing, the full size amplifier transformers make a difference. the 2Ru stuff sounds a bit smaller.

I have a X88r and use a VHT 2/50 in my rack as part of a WDW rig and both of them put a smile on my face every time I play...

Ive had the smaller vhts-both of them, and the mesa 2-90,played em for years.Great in their own right-no complaints, but when I made the move to the big boys there was definitely an upgrade in tone, feel, and overall response.

Well I'm guessing you have smile on your face every time you play too :D

none of them - due to the cathodyn phase inverter,
VHT's have a specific sound, which don't match with
SLO style preamps. Like Gene (Guitarslinger) said:

Okay, so this powermap pretty much buried my 2150 last night. OMG.

Maybe, my 2150 just isn't as well tuned as I thought it was. My 2150 sounded thin and dead in a way. :(

The VV crushes, and screams. It stays THICK and compresses just right on the leads. OMG. I can't believe how good it sounds. It's SOOO nice to see the word "Egnater" on my power amp, even if Rocktron built it.

ATM, this is my end-all power amp. I think.

try to grab a used Velocity Valve or Randall RT2/50 and you 're happy

I ran a 2150 with a X99 years ago it sounded fantastic, I later ran an SM100 (soldano 100w power amp) which I didn't like as much. I'd like to hear a VHT 'Classic".

Agreed. The 2150 just sounds bigger than the two space poweramps.

When James and I designed the "little cat" badcat preamp, we were gonna keep going on and do a pretty crazy poweramp too.(after what that preamp ran me,I ran out of funds though).Im thinking now about picking up where I left off again- 3 or 4 spaces, choice of class a or a/ b,pres, depth, & vols, ability to run one side class a, the other a/b at the same time, choice of rectif, solid st, or both, and there were a few other features he was gonna add that I cant remember..thats a lot a poweramp.

2150...I tried an Engl out once that was better than the smaller VHT ones...can't remember the model number though..

I would've liked to try out the engl power amps...nobody in my area had them when I bought the vhts.
