Hey errrbody!

Ok, so...years ago I had an xtc, 101b. I loooooved its slinkyness, its midrange, its fat lead tone, and the fact that it didnt have any harsh sizzle or treble. What i didnt like was the sometimes overbearing compression.

Tonally, i go for big, smooth kinda dark tones, full of harmonics and a good dynamic quality. I do not play metal, but do use a good amount of gain. Tones i go for are like bona, assa, Ej, andy timmons...big deep midrange, and a not so stiff lead tone, and not sharp. I play ALOT of fast neck pickup leads (big petrucci/gilbert fan), and the 101b, if not careful, would compress out.

My question is, for what i have noted, would the 101b or 20th ann. Work better? I hear the 20th is less compressed, whcih is good, but i also hear it is brighter, whcih may not be good.

Also, how different are they? Does the 20th still have that awesome low mid chewiness that the 101b has?

I tried a shiva, but it was very harsh and bright for me.

20thA with EL34s - you won't be disappointed. Not a chance.
101B, it's an industry standard, but doesn't come with as many tone shaping capabilities as the 20thA

For a solid review (if I may say so myself), check this:

The stock 20th comes with 6L6, but I've opted for the EL34 and am 100% totally stoked, jazzed and ecstatic about this amp since the day it arrived. The excursion, the modern/vintage, high/low power, Class A-AB, EQ switches, etc. makes this amp the only contender out of the bunch for me personally. They might be a bitch to find, or find at a reasonable price - but seriously, if it's the Boggy tone you're wanting without ANY compromise, just go for it.

Peace,
Mo
