I have a early 90's JCM800 1959 Super Lead that has a MV but I want more gain. Switchable, if possible, so kind of like the "Fortus/Mick Mars" amp that had a video made about it a year or more ago. I know of FJA and Voodoo, but who else still does mods? I heard Fortin and Friedman no longer do and I know Splawn won't do it....Any other reputable companies in the US?

Friedman still does mods he just takes a while becaus he has tons of work. If you want that circuit he's the one to do it since he's been inside the amp.

That said anybody that knows what an actual Jose circuit looks like should be able to figure it out, standard Jose 3 way with a larger initial plate resistor value, no diodes, post tone stack master.

I haven’t been to voodoo in a while, but I have had a few amps modded by Trace and it was a great experience each time.
From what I’ve heard lately though that he personally is out in the road a lot as a tech

I actually checked his site and it looks like he has discontinued mods for my specific amp.

You won’t find many that do straight custom mods anymore. Ground Zero does amazing work and I also recommend him.

However word on the street is he’s close to not doing mods anymore either to support his custom amplifier line (which is equally badass and highly recommended!)

I personally recommend the full on, one off custom stuff to @NewReligion. Dave has a history of tuning complex amps to user needs and also does great work.

there was an ampmaker Dr ??? that built a great marshall type VH tone amp

other maybes…

Emailed Dave about this very mod and he replied within an hour. I guess he IS available. I'll ask Ground Zero as well since that MOAB mod sounds great in the clips on his Facebook page, but if Dave will do it I'll probably go that route.

Nothing against Ground Zero, but I heard Dave's first prototype (it was a modded Marshall) at his shop when he was thinking about making a line of amps to sell to the public, and it was the most vicious amp I had ever heard. Eddie Van Halen trusted Dave to rebuild his magic Marshall... Dave's THAT good.

Thank you, I am humbled. I do not visit the forums often as I’m too busy working on amps to even keep up my chops.

But if I can help just reach out to my by email at New_Religion@Live.com

That was the name of my first CD. It was intended to be smart ass as the work is about life, creation & oppression. A couple listens you would get it.😉

Here isa short song. It is a G&L/Ibanez going into a 1984 Boss SD-1.

Pretty sure no one will nail down the amp.

Thank you again for the great words. Let me know if I can be of assistance.

Lots of complaints about voodoo's service the last few years.

I don’t think you can go wrong by sending it to Friedman, Hopkins or myself. It’s not a super complex mod that you’re looking for.

I modded one of those 90’s 1959’s for @thenine and it came out great. They need the B+ nodes adjusted all the way from the PI down to V1 and the PCB mounted pots are less than ideal. But they can be converted to flying leads where necessary. I don’t do complex mods like the MOAB on the later front mounted PCB’s, though.

I haven’t played any of Hopkins’ amps but I have heard good things about him and he seems like a genuinely good guy in the limited interactions we’ve had. I can tell he takes a lot of pride in what he does.

I am not taking mods currently as I work on my next run of Hellions. I can really only do mods or builds at once, not both. I’ll be back at the mods sometime in December most likely.

I wish I knew how to do this shit because I’m a tinkerer.

Yep Ground Zero all the way. Not just for the mod, but b/c Jeremy is a top notch dude. He knows his stuff inside and out sure but the best part is that he is a good guy who works with you. He communicates, sends clips and loves the whole process because he’s 100% in to it. That’s worth tons in my book.
