I need another LP and I am not forking out for a Gibson. I briefly had an Edwards and thought it sounded great, but it had slight intonation/tuning problems. Is this common for the Edwards? I would appreciate anyone sharing their Edwards experience before I make the decision to buy.

Those old Yamahas are awesome. Not just the studio lord, but the SBG series are LP killers as well. As are the Japanese Tokai Love Rock and Japanese Burnys. In the $1k range there are plenty of great LP type guitars.

Burny
Yamaha
Tokai
Greco
Bacchus
Edwards/Navigator
Epiphone Elitist
Heritage CM140/150

The one I had was horrible, but most of them are supposed to be decent guitars. I'd personally go with an old MIJ Burny though.

Find an old 70's vintage Ibanez Les Paul some of these are incredable players and and can be had around $200-500 bucks  Mine is a post lawsuit "78" and is a really sweet axe......John

Like with every guitar company there are good ones & bad ones. Ordering a guitar online is pretty much like gambling. I'm sure if you had a chance to enter a store full of Edwards you'd find something that you'd probably keep for as long as you play. So the safe bet is to go for a Gibson IMO.
If it helps I had a lot of Edwards LPs & there were awesome ones (which I kept) & not so good ones (which left). However compared to other guitar brands I'd say their QC is on higher level than I would expect. Right now Edwards LPs is all I play & I'm not planning to switch to anything else anytime soon if ever.
BTW - you like Gibsons? Get older Orville. I have one & it's so freakishly close that with a Gibson logo nobody would probably ever know.

I did...I guess I'd gotten a dud..it played nice and sounded good...but it wouldn't stay in tune worth a shit..probably needed some work on the nut or something...

that being said, I've had zero issues with my epiphone LP....play that thing constantly and I rarely have to touch the tuner...

as with any type of LP guitar, you just gotta play a bunch till you find one that's right...that's how I see it anyway

Mine had tuning issues at first but once I got it set up it was fine.

Absolutely love mine... Had a small tuning issue a while ago but it went away after changing my method of restringing.

I've never played a gibson style guitar (3 on a side with strings at an angle) that didn't have tuning problems UNTIL they were setup properly.

Hey Chris, got any main pointers for keepin em in tune well?

I could never get my R7 to stay intune at first, but after fitting sperzels and lubing the nut a bit.. it improved it a lot!

Well, I've managed to find the recipe that works for me. Nothing too special, really. I rub graphite in the nut using a mechnical pencil, wrap my strings a certain way (nothing special, just the way I do it), and believe it or not, make sure the intonation is on. It "seems" like the intonation being set right helps it stay in tune? I don't get it, but it seems like it helps!

That makes perfect sense to me! Yeah intonation can play a big part in keeping it intune.. its something i never thought would affect tuning stability, but somehow it does!

I use the pencil graphite too, i always put it on all my guitars nuts. I heard some guys put graphite on the saddles too.. i havent done that before though.

So I'm not crazy? I just figured out over the years that the intonation seems to help the guitar stay in tune. I don't understand how it works, but it sure seems to help!

Now don't get me wrong, my LPs don't stay in tune like a floyd equipped super strat, but they stay in tune much better than before I did any of this. I still do a quick 10 second or less check of my tuning after every few songs out of habit. I absolutely HATE being out of tune and with the Boss TU2 on my small board, I can quickly check it.

Nope you're definitly not crazy  Yeah i seriously cannot stand being out of tune, so i check before each couple of songs usually too! Being out of tune really puts me off of what im playing, so tuning stability is probably the most important thing for me.

Yeah, I basically play lead all the time anyway, so I set my lp up with the prerequisite "9's" across the board. Now string to string, its just triplets for days an days..... Oh yeah, it's also been modified to house the '5' humbucker configuration... You simply wouldnt believe.....
