I have some on my 2x12 wedge and they do work. I'm not big on the shield. It makes your tone sound like your amp's in a tunnel. It also messes with controlled feedback.

I've used the foam donuts instead and have had pretty good luck knocking out the presence-beam-of-death. Never tried a beam blocker.

Same here (actually I tried a sort of homemade donut) but never got quite the results I wanted. I've just finally realized that V30s and H30s sound awesome live and I have to live with the harsh, cutting sound if I want to cut through a loud drummer and another guitarist. For recording, home jamming or quieter jams where I'm not battling a live rock drummer, I use Weber Legacies and Gray Wolves with my Ecstasy Classic and it sounds sooo good.

Still want to try the Lynchback speakers. They seem to have some of the V30 cut but maybe not so in your face.

^ I didn't find that the donut changed the off axis sound to where I noticed it.

I've used them and they do work as advertised. There is a trade off though. The beaminess is drastically reduced and I also found the tone to be much more consistent when walking around the room. However, it did darken the sound making it much more bassy. I don't use them any more but when I did, I found that with my 4x12 putting them on the top two speakers and leaving the bottom two alone worked well. I think they're worth a try considering that they aren't expensive.

I had tried them when I had an EVH212 cab and it is something that you need to get used to. I can't really explain it. It is a different sound and it carries more without being harsh like was pointed out. You will definitely have to add more high end.

I looked at these and the donuts.

Months later I grabbed two pieces of packing foam, about 1.5-2.0 inches thick.

Each piece fits nicely in front of my 2x12 combos, almost covering both speakers entirely, while just resting gently on the grill cover.

I actually used the mics I mic the combos with to hold them gently in place. I have two 2x12 combos and use two foam pieces...one on each amp.

Perfectly even sound throughout the entire room, no matter where I stand.

Great sound too, although they do cut a little highs from the overall sound.

Cost me nothing and zero science...just works.

What you should take from this is that you should save your money and just try something as simple as this...if it works for you, great, it not then spend a little money.

Hope it helps.

I remember reading an article were "eddie" use to use fairly thick grill cloths to knock some of the highs off and to keep from killing everyone in the front row

I did not intend to keep the packing foam as a solution.

I was experimenting.

Much to my surprise...it sounds perfectly fine.

It is completely non-invasive, and if I wish, I can simply move the SM57s that keep them from falling away from the grill cover and toss them aside.

Thanks for your complete "value add" comment.

There are tons of info on Beam Blockers vs Mitchell Donut on TGP. Seems the donut is a better solution. I was going to try it but just went with the SRV solution and put some black duct tape in an X over the speaker.

Can anyone provide information with regard to close-micing and how it might be affected by the presence of the beam blocker?

I guess SRV did not care for his gear either...hmmm?

Sorry, just needed to vent.

I think beam blockers would definitely throw off the standard cap edge mic setting. Worth trying though.

I have an old metal handle marshall 4x12 that a prev owner painted the basketweave grill cloth black and stripped the tolex. It was always the best sounding cab of mine and all my friends cabs. Has 25W H's.

I have 8 of them that I'm not using, if you're (or if anyone else is) looking to buy used and save a few bucks. I'll cut you a great deal.
