I get the fact that a LP is fatter due to mass of wood ect, but I have 2 basswood body super strats and one with a maple top. You would think the maple top has more top end and it does a little but my Luxxtone El Machete is much more clear and needs more gain. The Anderson with the maple top is a smaller body and ozzes gain at the same settings. Context is thru my Headfirst alta

Ideas on why they sound so differently?

lots of variables. I would not think of playing my American Special through my Classic 30.
but through my blues deluxe its tone heaven

There’s no rhyme or reason, every so often I’ll have an amp fest with a bunch of amps, cabs and guitars and certain combos I expect to work don’t while others are just wonderful, just gotta find the right combos

Sometimes a style of guitar works better, Teles thru Vox amps is the classic example. Turns out the Vox amps were designed using a Tele as the test guitar so it makes sense.

Or sometimes similar guitars sound different thru the same amps and that often can be pickups. The 7k7 patent number pickups from my ‘80 LPC sound really crunchy thru a cranked Marshall, more crunchy than other higher output pickups even tho these are less output. I have no idea why, they are low output but they just have an amazing crunch.
