Will the used gear market ever even out?

For a short time it started to look like used gear prices were trending down and becoming more reasonable. Window shopping this morning it seems like people are back to listing used gear for damn near new prices.

I don't expect things will ever fully get back to the way they were when you could pick certain amps up for $300 all day long. But will this shit ever even itself out where we at least see consistent reasonable prices?

It looks like some of the manufacturers are working on reissues of amps that people covet. This should bring the most ridiculous down. But i think right now is similar to 2020 where people are listing high, but taking reasonable.

All markets are due for a correction, including the housing and equity ones. Germany, the largest economy in Europe, is already in recession, their slowdown will spread throughout the EU and eventually affect us. My life’s experience, whenever you hear or feel, “if I don’t buy now I’ll never be able to afford this again”, is the warning shot the bubble is about to pop, happened in 1987, 2000, and 2007. The “soft landing” we’ve enjoyed post Covid is about to implode if we begin a tariff war in spring.

No shortage of folks trying to sell $900 Squires & $1300 Epi's.
Even my local vintage shop ive been with 20 years he refrences everything i buy & sell off what that item trends on reverb.
And when buying he takes the low reverb price & when selling takes the high.
I still have a repore & wiggle room with him but not much.
The gear world is dominated by reverb.

Deals are out there, you just need to be willing to low-ball and walk. In the last few months alone I've gotten...
  • MIM Jackson Dinky & Hardshell Case for $500. Most listings by me were $700-900. Took me 3 different sellers to strike that deal.
  • Mesa 3ch DR for $900 with most listings being ~$1500 (some even for 2ch versions). Took me 2 different sellers.

Everything is listed high, though very little is actually moving.

I have a mint BE 100 deluxe listed locally for 2700, just got two more trade offers this morning. Every listing I see is three grand so I’m 10% lower.
It’s been listed since November 1

Nobody has any money.

Not a single cash offer, only other people’s Used stuff.

$500 mexican guitar cases never happen in a million years with me.
They can stop the entire flow of Mexican shit as far as im concerned and thats not political.

Where are some of you guys from that are always complaining about gear prices?? I’m in the metro nyc area which I know is heavily populated, but I don’t even go on Craigslist or marketplace cause there’s just too many good deals to have and I just don’t need to be tempted.

I'd tell him I don't shop at Reverb, I came to a guitar shop for a reason.

Unfortunately, the huge hikes companies are doing with new gear drag the used market with it. Why would you still offer the killer deal on a used version of something that just jumped up 30% in price. You would go up 30% as well.

I still remember my heartbreak in late 1999 when I was ordering my then, dream Gibson SG, 3 pickup custom at the dealer I worked at. Dealer cost was in the 1200s. The order was taking so long. It was rolling into 2000 and they would no longer honor that dealer cost, as it was jumping to 1900 for year 2000. They asked me if I still wanted the guitar and you can imagine what I said.

I'm in the midwest, and the pickings are slim to buy and even slimmer to sell.

Pretty much what I am seeing here locally as well.

I had a guy contact me for my mint Peavey 50/50 and he starts off his email with this is what I will trade you + cash for the power amp.......without asking if I was even interested in trades. I said I was good on pedal and to let me know if he would like to purchase the amp. I'm listing it at a a fair price of $500 bucks for an almost mint good working stereo power amp and just no interest whatsoever.......

Your assessment of people just don't have the disposable income seems to ring true....an amp like this would have moved easily just a few years ago.

Unfortunately I don't see things changing anytime soon.....the GOV is racking up 1 trillion dollars of debt every 100 days........this will only devalue the dollar further maybe beyond repair....

Same here in my neck of the woods. Gibson LPJ being asked for over 1k$ Canadian. But I like to follow gear on FB Marketplace and a lot are not moving or have been there for a loooooong time. Funny thing is seeing 4x12 cabs cheaper than 2x12.

When I post gear for sale, I mostly get trade offers. It's a difficult market at the moment

New gear prices are insane at the moment so it drags the used prices up as well. It looks like the used gear does not get the 30-40% drop from new price which is odd and the used gear sits unsold for months and months.
