Windsor Mods

Hey all,

Picked up a Windsor head again. While it's not the worst sounding amp, I'm sure most of you know they leave a bit to be desired tonally. I was just curious if anyone on this forum has experience modding the Windsors, what the best mods are, etc. I came across a preamp mod that supposedly makes it more akin to the preamp of the Splawn Nitro, but I haven't found anything for it. I'm looking for something to get the Windsor into "hot-rodded Plexi" territory. So like Jake E Lee's tone when he was with Ozzy or Akira Takasaki type of tone is what I'm looking for.

Also adding the main reason I'm looking into modding it is so I have a cheap amp I can use live without having to worry about someone trying to steal it.
 
I love mine…..but I’m using it as a power amp. Got my tremoverb on the left and I’m running its pre through the Windsors el-34 power amp. Sounds killer.

Would buying that Friedman tube preamp pedal thing be a good idea in that case?
I think I'd rather just mod mine than do that. Cause I'm trying to have this as a simple solution for playing live. My live rig is basically OD for solos, noise suppressor (I play strats), then a chorus and delay into the effects loop.
 
Someone here just recently made a thread similar to this, I’m not sure if he ended up losing his or not though
 
don't they share a lot of the same DNA as a 800 ?? Cause if you can convert to 800 specs than you can convert it into a JEL ..... anyone have a schematic for the Windsor ?

There's a few mods to convert it to more of a 2204 spec, if I recall.
 
just quickly glancing at the schematic ... I can see why people just simply turned them into 800 's .......

I'm not an amp guru ..... but I think if you want Jake E Lee kind of tone .... I think you can basically turn the Windsor into one .

I built a 2204 that I converted into a JEL ..... it's one of my favorite amps .....
