i bought some 6550 SED etc etc from tubedepot,

they for whatever reason didn't fit in my vh4,

why?

i thought this tube would fit, the socket apparently wasn't meant for this tube

is there another 6550 that fits better, or what could have happened here?

any help would be great

thanks

The socket is fine. The tube retainers have to be removed due to the giant metal 6550 base and replaced
with KT88/6550 retainers. FYI, it's a bitch to replace them.

shit shit shit merde merde merde

cause apparently what they sent me might have gotten fucked in transit, one tube was bad anyway, so idk!?? i'll just stick to el34's for now

thank you very much for the info i's appreciates its

It's a bitch, but worth it.

If you need the info on how to do it, hit me up.

Just out of curiosity... that happens with the herbert and 6550 as well ??? (I'm thinking on putting some in my next tube change)... will I need to change the retainers as well ???

Thanks

Yes, but the Herbert has the ability to just unscrew the retainers from the chassis as the screw bungs are built in. You can have them all off and replaced in ten minutes.
The VH4 has small nuts holding the screws on and have to be removed from inside the chassis. They also hold the tube socket down and it's really tight inside the amp.

this sounds like a nightmare, probably because i'm not a tech dude

It's a finicky job, but completely doable with steady hands, good lighting and patience.

its a royal pain in the pecker.... i did it on my VH4...took bout 2 hrs since my hands are relative to the Sasquatch. :D But it was def worth it...lovin my VH4 with the 6550s. You can also if you are in a hurry & want to try them out, just get a pair of cutting dykes & clip the small retainers right out of there. Then the tube will fit & you can try em out & cream your jeans
