hey guys, im using a shire wireless receiver model gp4 and i noticed that it really kills the clean tone on my herbert. i have a guitar cable plugged directly into the receiver which gets the signal from the transmitter hooked to my guitar. am i pluggin it in wrong, using the wrong cables, etc? why does it cause this problem?

Wireless applications will always have an impact on your tone and unfortunately it is often degradation of tone. The good thing is, that when set correctly, none will recognize the difference during the live show.

Think the wireless as an another additional gain stage in front of your amp. Thus, try adjusting the volume/gain of the wireless unit. Also, especially if you use guitars with different pickups the Radial Eng. Dragster might turn out to be rather handy tool (http://www.tonebone.com/tb-dragster.htm).

Yup.

Or the X2 Digital Wireless.

A tip from Peter (which I'm using with success now):
If you can't afford both, solder a 1000pF between tip and ring of the jack which hooks the transmitter to the guitar. Thats close to the Dragster (which also has an inductor inside) and inproves the sound a lot.

Do you think I would need a dragster with an X2 wireless ??? I've heard really great things about that wireless, and I was thinking on getting it... but, do you think would be necessary to get the dragster

Not after what I've heard - I doubt that you would need it with a X2. Even Ed Degenaro uses and praises the X2, which - at least to me - means a lot, he knows his suff.
The Dragster would be good for things like Sennheisers EW series or better AKGs, which aren't bad, but don't fit the guitars impedance perfectly and therefore let the guitar sound "not as full" as with a cable.

I've just ordered a Sennheiser EW-172 G2 wireless system, which is waiting for me to be tried out at home this evening. So how big is the improvement using a 1000pF with it? Just want to know in case that there is just a tiny bit of quality lacking, would the mod be able to deliver that last bit to satisfy me?
The reason I'm asking is that I already tried a AKG and dB technologies system and was very disappointed. Both systems colored my tone a lot and the dB was more a hum generator then anything else. My last hope is this Sennheiser system because I don't want to spend more than 500€ on a wireless and many people recommended it.

Just try the 1000pF mod. It costs you 20 cent and ten minutes ;)

I have a Sennheiser EW172 clone by Niefer (an OEM), which improved thru the 1000pF a lot.

Good point :D I'm at home now and will try out the Sennheiser. We'll see if improvement is needed!

So, finally I had some time to check out the Sennheiser System. Very fine unit I have to admit. Built to last and the sound is great too. Very close to the cordial cables I'm using and it adds only a little noise. As soon as I've got the time I will do the 1000pF Mod.

By the way, great to walk all around the house playing guitar

I noticed that my wireless system does not have a volume control. what else can be done?

I finally managed to build a rack mount adapter for my Sennheiser wireless but know I have a really bad humming problem. With cable everything is fine. When I switch to wireless the cleans are ok but from ch2. up to 4 the hum increases heavily. On Ch.4 it is so bad that it is actually as loud as the signal itself.

Any ideas?

@mikeinsane82: really don't know what else to do

Get Humfrees (Thomann)

Its a ground loop between wireless and the rest of the rack thru the rack-"schienen" to the amp.

Isn't a ground loop supposed to produce hum independent to the channel? I had a ground loop problem back when I used a rack and that caused a continuous hum throughout all channels.

You are going into the input of the amp, so the GL is ampliefied like your signal: the more gain on the amp, the louder the GL/hum. Just try to take the rack adaptor with the wireless out of the rack to be sure . . . don't let it touch any metal of the rack, then you'll know.

Good point there, with the rack I had the ground loop between pre- and poweramp so naturally it won't change when switching channels

And guess what, you were right. It is a ground loop. Humfrees will be ordered soon :) Thank you very much

what is humfrees? im gonna order that x2 rack wireless and i wanna prevent any problems ;)

Andy, Humfrees are plastic isolators, 4 for each unit, which prevent the rackunit from touching the rack (even its screws).

Distributor in germany (probably in europe) is the company "Adam Hall".

A quartet costs unbelieveable 2$ :D

Thanks Duesie, i just ordered 4 bags from musicians friend. I love snooping on posts and learning new tricks :D

peace
