Would you... trade an MHG for an EG5?

Semi-philosophical, semi-practical question here... for those of you who have had both an MHG and EG5, would you give up your MHG for an EG5? or said another way, once you have the EG5, would you ever go back to the MHG?

Two reasons I ask... 1) seems like everybody on the forum is obsessed (in a good way) with the EG5 and everybody's forgotten about the MHG, and 2) I have a love-hate thing with my MHG... I love it when I'm playing alone, but don't have much love for it in the context of a band.

your 2nd comment, is exactly why the MHG was made! You can get MHG type tone from it, but just darkening it up a bit, and cutting the mids out a bit. most people trade in or sell the mhg for an eg5. its basically version #2 of the MHG, with better ability to cut through the mix w/ more mids.

I was in the same boat. In an open arrangement or by itself, the module just ruled--super thick with sustain. Put a band behind it and it fades away. I finally sent mine in and had it modded to EG5 specs. I like the EG5 but there is something I miss about the MHG. Can't put my finger on it......Maybe it was just a little more "chewy". Overall though I prefer the EG5 because it has a broader spectrum of sounds available. I think it lets the character of the guitar come thru a little more than the MHG did. JMO

Hmmm... good to know on both counts... that I can get an approx MHG tone by dialing in the EG5 the right way, and that I could get my MHG modded to EG5 specs.

Another ?: Is there considerable difference between channels A & B on the EG5?

not considerable. most people dial then in with a lighter gain crunch setting, and a higher gain "shake your balls off" setting ;). or at least that's what i do!

Oh I know that feeling... I used to play a Triaxis + 2:90 + 2 G-flex ported cabs for gigs... that'd shake the balls off of about any living creature.

Suddenly I must have an EG5. I just dropped an email to Jeff to ask about modding my MHG to EG5 specs. I can foresee that matching up nicely with the B'MAN and SL2 I've got loaded in my (about to be modded) RM100.

I think you'll like it. I was a little apprehensive about modding my MHG but it was inexpensive to do, can be put back to MHG and I had it back in 3 days from when I sent it. I definitely dig the EG5.
Just for kicks, I ran the EG5 in my RM100 and at the same time ran on the B channel of the EG3/4 in my MOD100--played both heads together and OMG! it sounded huge. Those 2 tones side by side and mixed together was awesome.

I have now used the MHG for two gigs and I concur that it has a hard time cutting through the mix. I only use it for a lead channel so I am able to boost the volume to get it to cut but it still doesn't cut like the EG5. If I had to choose one I'd pick the EG5 but there is just something about the MHG for soloing (by myself in my studio) that kills. I need to record some tracks with it and see how that goes. It might be a module I end up using more in the studio than live.

I had my MHG modded to the EG5 specs and WOW! Never go back! I find the tone more dimensional, more refined, way more detailed and articulate. It now has an authority I never heard in the MHG, plus I like the lead tones better because I find they sing better than the MHG with better harmonics as well....just a dominating module. Very thick and creamy at times, or cutting and crushing. Wind back the gain and/or volume on the axe and get some AC/DC tones - maybe not perfect but good enough for rock n roll! I can't find a bad EQ...tight bass, thick, cutting mids and smooth highs.

I don't notice any difference between channel A and B and since I need one channel for lead, I keep them both dialed in with very high gain but one with mor volume. I use my guitar's volume control to get different flavors of gain. Eventually I'll pick up an EQ pedal to boost for leads so I can have each channel set differently.

This makes me wonder....if you don't use the MHG, what are the options for a modern high gain tone, ala Diezel, Bogner, or VHT? The EG5 seems more Marshall and Soldano.

MHG is great for playing alone so if you have no friends, its absolutely killer.

EG5 was made specifically to address the cut issues of the MHG.

I cant think of any reason to have both.
