I recommend getting one with an older Marshall donor amp if possible. I believe the one on reverb is a reissue Marshall

I've got one in an SLP reissue and it is a monster. Not saying you're wrong, just saying I love mine. :D

Yeah I have a reissue also that is killer. I spoke with Shea about what donor amps he finds to work best and he said the reissues from the 90s . I bet a good older Marshall does the trick too , if it would be better that's hard to say without having them side by side . It's possible the older ones could have more issues that need to be addressed when modding, that also could be why Shea recommends the amps from the 90s over the older ones ?

The one on Reverb is mine. It's pretty crushing! I wouldnt sell it, but I have two Black Suns, so...someone else can have one of them.

I’m sure the modded reissues are also great. All I’m saying is I’ve had lots of modded Marshall’s over the years (2 Monomyth’s, 4 Cameron’s, 2 Friedman’s, 2 Gower’s, Kruse, Hopkins) and found the ones that had older donor amps from the ‘80’s and ‘70’s to sound more raw and organic. Other’s mileage may vary. Just my 2 cents

I agree 100% with this. Gotta be the iron.

Yup. I have concluded this as well. My Monomyth was a 74' 100w Super Lead donor. I also have a modded 75' 50w (not Monomyth) that's just amazing. Those old Marshalls make killer modded amps.

However, I've played a 1987x re-issue Black Sun that is just brutal. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I'm with you...I have two, one is a 1987X, and the other is a late 70's 100w super lead. They sound very, very similar and you could probably attribute the difference to the extra wattage.

I have one of the 1987x Monomyths and it is my favorite amp in my collection. I have a 1977 superlead and it never bugs me that wasn’t used as a donor amp. Becaude the 1987x Monomyth is that good.
