I have a SL that I'd like to trade for a Friedman BE. I would throw in some cash to make the trade fair. I don't want to wait for my SL to be modded if I don't have to. I have a lot of gigs and need something for my dirty tones.

The SL2X is great but too aggressive for my needs. I love the tone at 4:25 in this video. I'm having a hard time getting that glassy tone with the SL. It might be in there but I'm not finding it.

Keep in mind there's quite a bit of other seasoning going on in that video.. An awesome power section, Dave's magic tweaks, Scumback M75's, Jaymar's skills, and knowing a little about Tone Merchants, they don't sell shit guitars, so that Strat probably has some excellent wood and top-shelf pickups in it.

Did you contact Dave about modding your SL to a BE ??

Yeah I did and will send my SL to him if I can't find a BE. I like the SL but it's smooth as butta where the BE has some teeth.

I have really nice guitars so that's not a problem. I like the SL but love the way the BE sounding on the Strat clip. That was slamming.

My favorite tone in that video is the Brown Hound part at around 3:38. I'd buy that amp for that tone alone.

Hey Klark:

I see you have reworked your rack! Looking nice!

What's the story with/purpose of:
1.) 2 identical TC units?
2.) Carvin (is this a solid state backup to your Randall RT2/50?)

Cheer!

Thank you! It's been a long road, but I'm finally settled in to what I love, other than the 2nd preamp. The GSP1101 is cool, but it takes too much time to tweak a good setting. Menu, up, down, back, dial back the chorus, enter, shit, uhh, wait, add some mids, back, store, change the cab, enter, enter, oh shit, uhh, back, damn, ah fuck it! The Engl e530 is looking good at this point. Then again, since I love the M4 so much, an E2 would be a perfect 2nd preamp..

The top/1st one is in series, which does some slight EQ, gate, and any effects that can't be mixed, such as filter & some modulation effects. My dry center cab is also fed directly after this unit.

The bottom/2nd TC is strictly for reverb, delay, some modulation effects, and only feeds my wet cabs. It's fed from a CAE lineout box that is after the RT2/50. This gives me the entire sound into the wet cabs of whichever of the two preamps I select, and the sound of the RT2/50.

Yes, well, it actually performs two duties. The primary function is wet cab power, as I mentioned above. The 2nd function is simply a backup power amp when I don't bring the wet cabs to a smaller gig. According to Bob Bradshaw, he actually helped with the design of this amp for wet cab use, which makes sense because I'll tell ya, it's really absolutely perfect for post power amp wet cabs. Loads of power, built like a tank, sounds excellent, and it's FOUR pounds! My 13 year old opened the UPS box when it arrived and said "Uhh, I don't think there's any electronics in this thing."

I sat down with the SL and found some really nice bluesy Strat tones using channel B. When pushed with the BB Preamp it gets a really nice singing bluesy tone ala Scott Henderson. Without the BB it's very SRVish. I'll try these settings on the gig tomorrow night to see how they sound in the mix. I've also been using one channel from each module. I've found that when you set one channel to sound good the other suffers so I just dial in one nice tone from each module and use pedals. Here's the settings if anyone's interested.

Gain 12:00
Bass - 9:00
Mids - 12:00
Treble - 12:00
Bass Boost and bright boost - 1
Density - Off
Presence - 1:00

Thanks - I'll check 'em out.

Wags, you need to keep a SL and get the Brown Eye separately. Just too different and you'll miss some of the aspects of the SL.

Were the settings on both modules the same?
I hear the BE as having a little more gain and tighter?

Both Channel A only. Recorded through the Classic 80 speaker/1x12 cab.

Both gains cranked. Different EQ settings but similar ranges. I really had the mids and treble high on the SL.

Doubleneck - yep, tighter low and more gain. I am REALLY digging channel A of the BE because it has some very
cool things happening in the mids. Channel B sounds pretty close to my EG5 Ch. A but a little less agressive.

FWIW on that clip I like the SL better, too. More of a clear crunch. But the BE has the VH thing going on in spades.
It will definitely cover the "glassy" broken up sound, too.
