Xotic BB Preamp thru SL module.....WOW

Picked up an Xotic BB Preamp today and ran it through my SL module......all I can say is.....WOW! Totally kick-ass combination. Gets the gain right up there with the SL2 and EG3/4, and stays articulate, punchy and full of life. Not as compressed as the EG3/4. It's early yet, but I'm thinking this might allow me to trade out my EG3/4 for a different module - my EG has been my go-to high gain Marshall tone, but the BB through the SL kicks all kinds of booty......I can smell an EG5 in my future.....

Adding a boost to the bassman kicks all sorts of booty as well. SL module is a great canvas for sure.

I have a BB preamp that I really like, but am selling it anyway! I've asked $145 shipped elsewhere, but I'd let it go to one of my Eggie brothers for $135 shipped to the US if any of you are interested.

The BB is sold!!

That's a good price for a great pedal.

I have the AC Booster as well. I think it's the best TS style OD around. It has nice compression and great low end EQ. I will buy an RC some day too, just based on the experience and reputation of the Xotic stuff.

Wish I had known that before I bought mine.. Oh well, even at full price, the BB is worth every penny.

I don't have a BB or any Xotic pedals for that matter, but I do agree that the SL mod takes pedals really really well.

I run both my TS clone and my rat clone into it and it simply loves them. I've also tried a rangemaster clone and it sounds great, too.

I have the RC Booster which is the "cleanest" boost of the Xotic line, but it does have gain, treble and bass knobs so you can adjust the tone somewhat if you like. It's a wonderful pedal, if you want just a simple volume boost that won't effect your tone, this is it - perfect for leads, and if you want, you can add a little hair with the gain and EQ knobs. The MOD 50 takes it perfectly. With this pedal and the Mod 50, it's like having an 8 channel amp lol..........

Exactly. I find the Xotic stuff to match up so well with the Egnater that I use it the same way. Actually I use mine to turn my MOD 50 into 6 channels. I use a Bassman in slot one. In slot two I use my tried and true old school EG3 single channel mod. There is just nothing that sounds like that module to my ears. It is my sound and I have no problem going with it. I have the BB and the AC and I will have to try the RC. It might be a better option as a boost instead of my Fulltone Fat Boost. Although I love that pedal too.

I can't afford to get a Vox right now or a COD so i am hopinh getting a used BB Preamp will give me some added flavors through my Bassman! I use a Creation Audio Labs boost in the loop, which is AMAZING! For that reason I was going to buy a Creation Audio Labs Holy Fire but that might be overkill.

if you get rid of ur EG3/4 let me know i NEED that or the bman to have them all :D which ever one i dont have i will change my m4 order.i just picked up a SL1 on evilbay,so i have a spot on my order but need to decide which one i want before shipping in October.

I am surprised you say that - is it the regular BB or BB+? I have the BB but it seems best for lead, not rhythm so it is less useful than I thought. You say it gets your SL's gain up but is that for rhythm as well? I'd be curious of your settings. :) I say this because the BB tends to compress and make the tone more lead friendly and less rhythm friendly to my ears. Maybe I need more time on it.

Well....I don't have my Eggie modular stuff anymore (getting an AxeFx, and going to put a Rebel on order......) but.....yes - the BB (regular not Plus) through the SL was very good on rhythm. Using Channel A of the SL with the BB got me a very good Plexi+Tube Screamer-ish type rhythm sound. Not quite JCM800 but in the neighborhood. Ch B with the BB would be more suited for lead though.

Rick,

Digging up an old thread..

My goal with the Plexi or SL was to get a killer Plexi rhythm and lead tone and have the ability to take it into pushed Marshall high gain territory with the BB or another pedal(AC?) but not just for leads. Only problem I see is the compression which the BB and supposedly the AC as well. Lowered compression helps to keep it from getting congested like most screamers/middy pedals with Marshalls. I know the AC has some mids.

The BB is going to sound good no matter what module you use it with.

Not with the high gain mods however. I want to try the Rockett Pedals Blue Note.

I have heard more than one person say the BB sounds small compared to other pedals but I don't hear that.

I am chocked not as compressed! The BB can really compress on channel A of the SL2 which is JCM800-ish. I know a tube screamer can sound great into a JCM 800 so maybe the lower gain AC would be better with the SL2 channel A and the BB best for the Plexi tones and the Fenders.

Thoughts guys?
