XTC C40 mod clips

Wow, thats a night & day difference! Is this a mod that can be done on other Bogner amps? I have a 20th Shiva.

In 20th Ann Shiva You got an Excursion knob on the back of the amp. But I don't know if it works similar to Depth control in previous Shivas, where You have 1M log pot paralleled by 2n2 cap. Changing pot to linear and removing the cap makes the Depth control working exactly the same way as in my amp. But removing cap only would work too.

You got to trace Excursion path in Your Shiva and see if there's any cap belonged to it. If so, You may remove it and the tone will become more open.

Regards, Andy :)

I removed the C40 from my XTC last night. Getting ready to put it back together and give it a try. The on-off was really off-on right?

You could tell the difference for sure. Oh, and thanks to Setneck and Jamme for the inspiration. Tone report to follow.

I don't think the Shiva suffers from any blanket effect. The only problem with the Shiva is it needs to be goosed a little to get the best tones. I think the Shiva I owned was louder than the XTC.

In short on-off clip first sound is with the cap and second without it, with aprox. 170k resistance in nfb circuit in all clips.

Oh yeah, now I get it. Cap on, cap off. I though you mean...oh never mind.

I've been wanting to get an XTC for so long and between your mods and the Marvel mod, I'm gonna be so damn happy to start tweaking.

Heh, in fact I was quite sceptical about modding XTC. I spent long hours on discussing with Marvel about reasonableness of all that. But we decided to tweak it as the circuit is designed almost perfectly. Not mentioning that the amp is manufactured the way that is unattainable for most of the rest "boutique" builders"...

But I wish I'd start with C40 mod... OK, in fact, TAD/Mojo Dijon caps did a great job too :). But I'd know which way to follow if I'd start with removing C40 and changing dirty Treble pot to linear...

XTC is one of the best amps on the planet. F***ING PERIOD. No f***ing doubts about that. Reinhold did a great job with 1959 circuit. I don't even aspire to be a reviewer of any Reinhold's ideas. He is a genius, a visionary for us musicians on the same level as Steve Jobs (RIP) in His area. But those two small mods, which can be actually done factory, in my very very humble opinion, make the XTC even more perfect amp than it is already.

I can't even imagine that I would ever use any different amp than XTC. I'll buy another one, remove C40 and change Treble pot to linear. And that would be f***ing _IT_ :).

No... my ultimate dream is ptp XTC.... JMP topology...no useless shit like Plexi mode, Excursion, Structure...straight loop. Green and Blue Channel with 22nF PI output caps... and additional switchable gain stage named "Red Channel" :). Maybe someday... :)

Regards, Andy :)

Thanks for posting these clips. While i like what the mod does i am simply to satisfied with my 101b to mod it. It allows me to focus on my playing. I'm good

I wholeheartedly agree with you that it's the best amp on the planet. I just bought another one last week that lands on Thursday. I have an XTC Classic as well, so I'm going to be doing some comparing with different cabinets and what not. Although I like the Classic for what it is, I LOVE the 101b!
