Hey guys,

My 101B pops loudly when I take it off standby after initial warm up. It also crackles I bit. I tried tapping on the preamp tubes with pencil to see if I could find the culprit, but can't really single one out. Is this most likely V1? And if I need to replace it, what is the consensus on the most sweet, fat, chewy, gainy, tube for V1 position?

Most Ecstasy's seem to have various "pops" when switching channels or engaging the FX loop from the Bogner footswitch. This is due to the type of relays that Bogner uses which were chosen for sonic quality. I think mine may pop sometimes when flipped from Standy to On....or maybe not.

The crackling is most likely a preamp tube and you will just have to swap out a few to see which on it is. V1 - V4 to start. Chinese 12ax7's seem to work well in all positions and sound best to me.

Hope that helps!

Mine does the same, almost always there's loud pop when switching standby, mostly when going from On to Standby. So don't bother, it's normal ;).

Sovtek LPS does great job for me as an input V1 tube, same as in PI position. But that tube isn't too gainy, it giver rather clean input for all channels. If You want gainy tube go for chinese.

Regards, Andy :)

mine doesn't make a pop noise, when turning on but, it is a brand new amp. I had an old fender that did the same thing and it was from carbon build up on the switch. I cleaned it and it went away, for a short time then, came back. I've been using the amp for years with the pop noise so no biggie. I'm not a tech so just IMHO.
