Hi!

Some time ago I started to feel Structure circuit a bit too muddy. I liked what it made with tone generally but I felt that the cap let too much bass go through. I was told by Charlie that the cap in the Structure circuit is 1.5uF tantalum. Inspired by the Splawn QuickRod I tried several combinations of resistors and caps attaching them to R11 resistor and found out that 0.68uF and 1uF caps opens the tone the way I wanted it. Using 0.68uF cap I got very nice Marshally overdrive, but I liked 1uF even more.

Invaluable Marvel made me a Structure Mod in two versions. At first I wanted to have four caps available to switch into the circuit: 0.68uF, 0.82uF, 1uF and 1.5uF. Marvel removed the low input and installed 4-way rotary switch, connected to a place of C2 cap.

Soon it turned out that there is only slight difference between 0.68uF and 0.82uF and I still don't like 1.5uF there :). So basically I need only two caps in mod: 0.68uF and 1uF. As the rotary switch didn't fit the place at the back panel at first the mod was installed in place of low input. But as I need in fact only two caps it can be done like regular Marvel Mod, even without the board, only by attaching the caps directly to the switch. And that is how we finally done it :).

So, having Structure switch engaged I have now 3 possibilities: 0.68 uF - no cap (so only R43 resistor in circuit, giving 2.35K in cathode without cap, similar to QR with 2nd gear where You have 2.7K resistor) - 1uF.

The tone is really more open, without losing Bogner flavour.

Regards, Andy :)

Hi!

I made some short clips how the amp sounds now. As yet, I ended up with such mods:

- 1st dirty stage cathode: - 1k5//1uF (stock: 820R//.68uF) - tried 1k8 here but it was too thin.

- 2nd dirty stage cathode (Structure circuit): 4k75 + 6k8//.68uF WIMA MKS2 (stock: 4k75 + 4k75//1.5uF tantalum) - it gives overall 2k8 cathode resistance (stock: 2k375), so that stage is close to typical Marshall one

- 2nd stage plates: snubber cap lowered to 680pF (stock: 1n) - even better is 470pF here, but in my setup the amp is prone to squealing.

Clips are short and a little dirty :), but You can catch the point of mods. One clip is with Structure off and resistor/cap piggybacked directly to the R11 and another on is with Structure on and .68uF cap soldered to pcb.

Clips are done with Zoom H2 recorder. Setup is:
- LP Custom (498T pup) + 1960A
- Red Channel settings (o'clock): Presence 13, Treble 13.30, Middle 12.30, Bass 10.30, Gain 10, Boost On, PreEq B1; Excursion M
- Preamp tubes: V1 - LPS; V2 - EHX; V3 - Tung-Sol RI; V4 - EHX; V5+V6 - LPS
- Powertubes - EL34 Winged =C='s
