I'm looking for something I can use at home for practicing, and still get a good tone, at a low volume. I have heard a lot about the Yamaha THR-10X, and it sounds really good. That said the Boss Katana gets good reviews as well, plus it has wireless. Anyone here try them both for high gain? I don't have anywhere near local that stocks either.

following. I booked a guitar lesson with one of the guys from Mastodon on their tour this summer and was told to bring a practice amp and I dont have one at the moment.

I don’t have any experience with the Yamaha but I have the Katana Air and I love it and use it almost daily. Really cool and convenient to just pick up and start playing. The wireless factor is what sets it apart for me, and is a big part of why I enjoy using it so much. Sound-wise I don’t think it does anything some other quality options can’t do.

I use mostly two custom patches I made (1 lead and 1 clean) but editing is really easy via Bluetooth. I think it’s a great option for a practice amp. Again, I don’t have any experience with the Yamaha or even if they are comparable in price? Good luck with your decision.

I picked up a THR-10X, and it is pretty awesome. I run my iPad into the line in with some backing tracks, and can get some fun usable tones at low volumes, using the headphones output to some monitors makes it even better.

Thinking of picking up a THR 10x what y cable are you using to go from the headphone out to the studio monitors?

THR sounds great, but you need to use it with something other than the stock speakers

Oddly enough I just played through both the other day. I think the THR-10X sounded fantastic. Katana wasn't anything worth writing home about.

I have had a Peavey Vypyr VIP 2 for about 3 years now, and it continues to impress me with how good its high gain sounds are (particularly considering the low price point). I play that thing all the time while watching youtube, it's nice not having to worry about wear and tear on tubes with hours of low volume practice and tons of on/off cycles.

The Blackstar Fly 3 is pretty cool, especially if you run in through an external speaker. Also the Peavey Vyper VIP series is pretty solid. Out of your two choices I would go Yamaha.

I'm Really Interested Too. I've been looking at 3 different Amps. 1. Marshall DSL20HR 2. EVH LBX V.1 3. Laney IRT-Studio

I'm Very Open to Suggestions...I want something that will have great High Gain Sounds, Chunk/Low End Response. i'm concerned with the High Gain sounds first....a clean channel would be great too but the clean doesn't have to be perfect.

I have not tried a IRT studio but the product is very interesting, and I have yet to hear any thing bad on them. I would think their high gain may be a bit better.
