so here’s a cool vid. one thing that kills me with the Yngwie pedals is the noise. But the yellow one of these is pretty quiet, a bit less gain but in the ball park of the others. wonder if the new mxr is noisy as most?

this circuit is super noisy in general .... I've built a few DOD 250's .... I've considered re-laying out a board for a modded version .... but even increasing grounding planes etc .... I don't think will help it

Do these use a 741 Opamp ? They’re sort of inherently noisy, aren’t they ? Is there a more modern low noise substitution that won’t mess with the tone ?

I forget if it's a single or a dual op amp .... the LM741 is notorious for being noisy and crappy .... but the thing is ... sometimes you can get decent results with noisy and crappy depending on your application ...
there would be plenty of subs I think if it's a single op amp chip ( which if I remember right... I think it is )
if it's a dual .... there's a ton of options

yeah the feel of whatever is in the 250 is awesome, but not worth the noise for me

Don't be a pussy, Yngwie never became the god he was worrying about hiss and noise! He just made sure he played more notes so you wouldn't hear it and then rode the volume with his pinky! As I have said before..sometimes you sacrifice tone for " quiet". Don't be next to the amp when you play. Even the quieter yellow pedal is going to be played with the vol and gain up when you go for that sound so get used to it ol chap!

For the record, the grey and his first dod signature sounded the best, then the Fender, then the yellow. The yellow is reigned in (blood). Missing the oomph. I'd be interested in hearing MXR's and how it stacks up. Also.. it's red. Red is cool. Red makes me play faster.

Opamp used in these MXR versions is an RC4558P.

Played the new MXR a few times. It doesn't sound like that yellow one, which seems kinda dull.
It hisses a bit, but if I decided this pedal was "it", I'd get a noise gate.

Cripes kinda harsh bro 🤣!

Yngwie has always uses a noise gate. I thought that was common knowledge

One thing people forget is the original DOD preamp 250’s all sound different. They just threw in parts. So it hard to know what version they copied or what’s in the gray one in the video.

Have a look. Top one is a gray unit. Notice the bottom one has a green cap. I changed it because it sounded like crap when I got it 30 years ago. I noticed all of the other ones had a different cap in that spot, so I replaced it. Boom, it sounded better. Notice I removed the battery jack out of two of them. Another thing I did 30 years ago 🤣

Yeah, when I was buying them I never understood why they all sounded slightly different. The second from the bottom with the "33" sticker near the op amp was always just a little more compressed sounding. They all sound good though. The top gray one sounded best with single coil pickups and got a bit muddy with humbuckers.

I have the black YJM308 one. Noisy, but my main problem with it is even with it off it sucked some volume and top-end off. It was very noticeable when I took it out completely.
