Does anyone know what pickups Yngwie was using in his strats early on? Like in the Steeler, Alcatrazz and 1st two solo albums days? I prefer his tone on the early stuff so much more.

I know he was using DiMarzio HS-3's but don't know when he switched to those. Anyone?

I saw him in 84 at the capital in passaic...I remember reading something back in the day about him wrapping his own pickups, and trying different types of winds & wiring.

I think he used DiMarzio FS-1's, I'm sure 70sharthead will chime in, he'll know for sure.

He'll know what flavor edible undies Yngwie wears. I'm just asking about pickups. "shart head" :hys:

I never read that one.

he used FS-1's on the steeler album and HS-3's from then on....i remember him saying that in an interview years ago. If the fs-1's werent so damn noisy, that would be my preference for bridge pickup.

live sentence---night games---just blazing stuff!

Isn't part of his sound using back to back overdrive pedals though, because those pickups don't throw enough output? I too am looking for some single coils, right now leaning towards Dimarizo Virtual Vintage stuff. I like Yngwie's sound but I am afraid those pups don't have the output I want. It's been 10 years since I played one of his Strats, so I don't remember what they sound like.

My favorite new DiMarzio singles are the Area '61 Bridge and the Area '58 middle and neck. I just wired up one of my new Strats with the VV '54 Pro in the bridge and neck with the Area '58 middle. I'm not really digging the VV '54 Pros so I ordered another Area '61 and '58.
Have you tried the '61 in the neck? I have a 58 in the neck with the 61 in the middle right now (Tele) and don't really like that combination in this gtr. Been thinking about swapping them around....could save me some work to just get something else.

I was thinking the Virtual Solo for the bridge, and either the blues or heavy blues for middle / neck. My Strat is pretty bright with alder body / maple neck. The specs of the area 58 / 61 seem low output and pretty bright according to the website.

Yes, I tried the '61 in the neck and I didn't like it. The reason why I like the '61, '58, '58 combo is because it retains the 'quack" in the 2-4 positions, some people don't prefer that. I also like the '61 because it stays open in the bridge with higher gain and it has some bite to it that can be controlled with the tone knob if need be, I have my tone controls wired to the bridge instead of the middle.
The 58 is too bassy for me in the neck...I never use the middle by itself. What was the issue with the 61 in the neck?

My strat has Texas specials - how do the Dimarizo's compare?

Too bassy? The '58 is one of the brightest lower output ones they make. Did you have the pickup lowered far enough? I don't use the middle either, the '58 in the middle just accounts for more of the "quack". The '61 in the neck was just too hot for my tastes.
Its pretty bassy in the neck of this guitar. Its pretty low already, not sure if it will go any lower.

Interesting. I can't stand a bassy neck pickup, that's why I dig the '58's in the neck.
I probably like less bass.... :)

Impossible, I can't stand anything too bassy, pedals, amps, pickups, etc. I would like everything with just a treble and a presence control only with the bass control only going in the negative direction.
YIKES!!!!!!

Yeah, but donbarzini is used to playing in bands with two bass players so that's where that comes from.
