Was he still using Lee Jackson preamps back then or did he have a JCM 800 ?

he used the JCM800s on No Rest for the Wicked (along with SOME of the Lee Jackson/Metaltronix stuff) all the way up to the present...boosted by the trusty modded SD-1!

thats been the basis of his sound this whole time...LP with EMGs, SD-1, JCM800, along with the Super Chorus (and more recently the CE-5 Chorus Ensemble), the Dunlop Crybaby, and the Roto-Vibe, and the EV 200 watt speakers!

edit : i forgot, the 6550 tubes too!

I realize I'm probably alone here, but I prefer his Ozzy Live Budokan tone over the Live Loud tone.
Both are great tho...

it's the same rig (have pics of both somewhere on this hard drive)

most of what we hear in the difference is in how it was mixed post-production.

(btw, I like the budokan sound better too)

I knew It was the same rig but it sounds like he's tweaked "something" quite a bit, ya maybe the mastering of the dvd too... anyways. to me it sounds like he's got two of whatever he had going in the Live Loud dvd running in tandem! H U G E sound!

He was using a bunch of Lee Jackson stuff back then, even most of his Marshalls were modded by Lee. He had also a rack with a bunch of stuff in it. I have some pics il find them and post them in a minute.

Ok here we go, first pic is Zakks Rig he used on the tours for No Rest For The Wicked and most likely for the album too. Theres what looks like two Jubilee heads, but Lee gutted them completely and rebuilt them to a hot rodded JCM800 type spec. The rack has the usual stuff like the Lee Jackson preamps, im sure he used these for cleans because his two Marshall heads there did all the dirty stuff.

Now this one is the No More Tears rig, which he used on the tours for the No More Tears album. Most likely the Live and Loud cd too. Looks like hes got a Metaltronix M-1000 head and a Blues 59 there too. Similar stuff in the rack system (GP-1000 preamps, Yamaha SPX-90s, Wireless system etc)

Hope this helps man!

I've played two Lee Jackson amps over the years and HATED both.
I would take an 800 with a boost pedal any day over those amps... just my experience I guess.

I owned the Metaltronix M-1000 for about one day. It was the worst sounding amp I've ever played through

Wow! That's interesting, AmpliFire! I really did NOT like the two I played thru at all. The were over-compressed and choked. There were other things but this was a few years ago - I do clearly remember hating them.

The Metaltronix amps were used on the No Rest For The Wicked album. No More Tears was recorded with an EL34 loaded JCM800.

I had the metaltronix 1000 for about six months. I could get the Zakk sound out of it pretty easily, but that was about it. I was very unstable and after 6 months the power transformer blew up - my power tubes actually arced like a horror movie. I will say this, it was the loudest amp I've every played through, and the attenuator was really not that great (made is sound very compressed and buzzy). Traded it after the transformer was replaced.

When i saw Ozzy at Ozzfest the same year as the Live At Budokan dvd came out, Zakk's tone was exactly the same as on the dvd. I dont think they did anything to his tone on the dvd, thats just how it sounded!

I have that pic too i think, is Zakk in the picture and has he got a cowboy hat on?

yeah that's the pic - he has a beard!

Yeah the tone on Budokan just floored me when it came out - If it hasn't been touched up, it's one of the fattest ever!

Can you post that pic please, I don't have a scanner

BTW - After Live @ Budokan came out, I finally sold my Recto and bought an 800 (which I had modded with a Jose mod) best tone Ive ever had.
