hi!

i just receive a brand new herbert in my shop, and has ruby el34 inside, and has new mini switchers( for channels and so on...).

what happened with the 6550 ones?

ciao

I recently tetubed the herbert with el34 sed winged-c. I had 6550 in in but 2 off them broke down within a vew months. I find it much better sounding than the 6550 tubes, it depends on the person and what youre after.

For me it will stay SED winged c with tad preamp tubes, till now the best combo, just how i got it a year ago. There is much less off low end thump but much more mid growl and the cleans are stil a win.

Hi Berni,

don't know if it helps: I think, Peter changed to 6550 early this year because of a quality problem with EL34s. I have to say, that my 6550 went down after the second use, and Peter put in the Ruby El34 again. So maybe, the 6550 were not as reliable as he thought. He said, that these new Rubys he is getting from US are good quality and very reliable. Besides that they are good sounding and very dynamic. Maybe he is putting them in all new amps now (I know, he is very concerned about tube quality). I have to say, I'm glad, he went back to the EL34, as I prefere them to the 6550s. But that is of course a matter of personal taste. Before the new Rubys I had JJ El34s, which weren't bad, but didn't work too long either.

IDK boys...i havent had one issue with my 6550s in either amp. and i love the tone. But i would imagine Peter & Co will chime in sometime on this topic. Until then, keep a rockin!! :)

No issues on my 6550 stuff and it is my favorite tube so far.

ok, i had issues in the past with several herbies, ( all with el34), and now i choose two new herberts with 6550, and serial number almost correlative....but i liked the el34´s a lot. so i dont know if i must change one to the newest el34...it sounds amazing indeed.

...the new mini switches have a little bit strange feel( not bad, only different). ;)

also notice that the signature in the back is imprented ...or very well writing. :D i liked the personal touch of lars or stephan... :aww:

best

They are still personal signatures. That will not change. ;)

Antonio,

we were out of the original switches for a short time
but got stock again.

Again issues with the 6550 tubes. SED switched to lead free
glas and had problems with the vacuum inside the tubes.

Less issues with the EL34BHT and I like them !

Antonio,

it´s OT but do You have or do You know a skilled
service center in Spain ?

ROHS-compliance is killing us all!

Die letzten 2 Jahre waren röhrenmäßig eine Katastrophe

Try this on one of your Herbies....6550's in outside and tweeners and 34's on the inner set. Gives a bit of a different feel to the amp. The 34's will break up much quicker, so you get some good heavy gain with a lot of punch.

FWIW - I tried the Ruby 34's and preamp tubes and didn't care much for them. Perhaps if I had left them in longer than 10 minutes for a proper burn-in....but, they were too sterile and chimey for me. I will stick with SED's I think for the Diezels.

Hi Steve,

funny, I went from 6550s over JJ EL34s to the Ruby El34, and at first thought, the Ruby tubes were not warm enough compared to the JJs, but I played them for a couple of weeks now and love them. Compared to the SED winged C EL 34, which I tried as well, I find the Rubys warmer in my Einstein.
I like the Ruby AX7 for V1 as well - it is very dynamic. I didn't like it in V2 though.

But ... nothing sounds better in my Marshall than SED EL34s.

So - like always - it comes to personal taste - and you have to give it a try yourself, which costs money, time and energy. Tubes are one segment in a big chain (Speakers, Pickups, Cables, Guitar) - It is not easy. Alternative: Modelling ... Line 6 ....? :aww:

But I really don't understand, why it is not possible in the year 2009 to manufacture reliable tubes - can somebody explain it to me?

Greetings

...sorry, i dont understand what means OT... , we have near the official marshall-mesa tech service, there are friends, but, i dont know if they can take care of diezels, cause dealers contracts...you know.

so the last herbert is a unique piece, with different switchers?.... , when do you come to spain?...sun,cool beer, good food....you know that you have home here, no problem.

best,
antonio
