So I just got my VH4 in the mail (used) and when I was messing around I noticed it was sounding REALLY dark, almost like my tone knob on my guitar was down a bit. I noticed that the plastic index piece on the far left tube was broken off, although none of the actual tube pins were. It's safe to say I think that something happened during shipping :(

Anyway, All the tubes were lighting up fine, and no real crazy noises or anything. I sent Peter an email already, but in the mean time, does anyone have any ideas what this might be?

Here's a quick clip, pretty crappy, but oh well. : http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12387717

Just sounds more poo then I think it should...but then again I've only ever owned a Herbert...not really sure

My first guess would be that the tubes are just old/worn, need a new set and rebias. Also, what brand are the preamp tubes? A lot of people default to JJs, but I think they sound pretty dark in the VH4.

Thats starting to be my guess as well (fingers crossed) . Pre's are Ruby's and reasonably new apparently. Im going to throw a quad of 6l6's in there pretty soon and see if it's all better. finding broken pieces of tube in the socket after shipment, followed by not-optimal performance just got me a little concerned is all.

I can definitely sympathize. As long as you've got sound though, I'd say that's most likely the problem.
