I ve got my VH4 for about 6 months. I really like the 3rd and the 4th channel. Channel 3 is very dynamic and responsive. I really like the way it sounds.

Playing lead on the 4th channel I ve got problems to cut through the mix. What I like is the huge amount of distortion this channel delivers but when I m rehearsing it´s a little bit too compressed and muddy. Turning down the gain to 10 o clock helps. But what I want is a more biting and dynamic tone, without turning down the gain. Any ideas? :)

Cheers Otto

I'm having the VH-4 for 8 years and to tell you the truth I never had this problem. I usually put the volume of the 4th channel a bit higher than the 3rd, add more mids and the gain at 1 'o clock.
There are a lot of other factors which play a huge role on how the amp sounds at rehearsal actually, meaning the construction and size of rehearsal space, other instruments in the band, other guitarists in the band (what's their gear) etc.

Thank you for your quick support and for answering my questions.
I ll send you an email. Talking german makes a little bit easier for me. Maybe you can describe in a few words what s possible and how it is done.

Settings are in hours
Channel 3
---------
Bass - 1 to 2 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Mids - 11 to 1 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Treble - 1 to 2 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Gain - 3 to 4 'o clock depending on the pickups and the guitar
Volume - 10 'o clock (adjust according to your effects level)

Channel 4
---------
Bass - 12 to 1 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Mids - 1 to 2 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Treble - 1 to 2 'o clock depending on situation (playing alone or in a band context)
Gain - 12 to 1 'o clock depending on the pickups and the guitar
Volume - 11 'o clock (adjust according to your effects level)

I use only 1 effect processor and in parallel (the effects level is 100% wet and I adjust from VH4's mix knob usually set at 12 'o clock)

The deep knob is adjusted according to the cab (can vary a lot). Usually at the Diezel 4x12 I set it at 1 'o clock.

My ideas (played a VH4 for 3 years): crank the mids and ask Peter to install a second master.

@Peter:

Hi Peter,

I will be playing with my band this weekend. I m going to check out some different settings and maybe this is the answer...

Cheers Otto ;)

Before modding why don't you try some other ideas like:

- Boost pedals - I like how you can shape the sound with these, things like tubescreamers etc. set low
- Tubes - Maybe some other preamp tubes in the slots that affect channel 4
- Speakers - Try it with another cab or different speakers if you can

I found out that some of my problems must have come from wrong setting I ve been using on channel 4. Too much "deep" and not enough mids. I ll try out some different settings and maybe this helps. Maybe I should change some preamp tubes. Finding the right tone isn t easy. ;)

Cheers Otto
