Hi,
This question is mostly for Peter, did you ever had any plans on building a (herbert based) preamp ? (preamp only)

But anyway, I know the three dual-based power tubes would still be THE perfect poweramp for herbie... It was mostly for my sound engineer who wants only preamps, :/

Kind regards!!

Btw, I looked a bit, but didnt find any subject on this, my apologies if i didnt see it !

Yes, we should have a preamp but I´m
very busy till 2009.

:aww:

Great news !!
As I always says, take all your time to build the best thing possible

Herbie or Vh4 Based, or something different?

Cleans of the Herbert, second and third channel of the VH4 and Herbert´s lead channel..
Midi selectable Midcut option and motorized pots

... Best Preamp Ever :rawk:

You forgot channel 2 of Herbert - That's my favourite :)

I already don't like him, though I don't know him :) :gethim:
Get a Herbie full stack and blow him off the surface...

Motorized pots have been used in Mike Soldano's X88 pre, if I am not mistaken. Done in order to be MIDI controllable and it was :)

That's not really necessary though (although will look cool :) ).

The cool thing with the eighties is that everything was going MIDI that time. I have a twenty somethin' years old Dynacord Reference 1000 MIDI programmable all tube combo (go figure :) ). You can twist every pot, save the patches/positions and switch - still works like a charm. And it's beaten to death. Built like a freagin' tank. Few years ago it was still with the original Siemens ECC83 tubes in it.

^ it was the X99.

Anyway, this thread really makes me happy. I want a Diezel VH4, but not badly enough to make it my 'one' amp. If I had enough funds, I'd run a Diezel VH4 in stereo with a Bogner XTC Classic. That would definately cover a lot of tonal territory, probably everything except the kind of cleans I want. A preamp would be a perfect solution as I could stuff a lot of 'signature' sounds from different companies (Bogner, Soldano, Diezel, Mesa, Matchless) and run things through a VHT power amp or something.

... but for now, I hope the Fractal Audio Axe FX will suffice. :scared:
(Selling my XTC 101B soon to make the switch.)

Motorized pots are the best for versitility and live use. My ultimate head would be motorized. Just one thing though. I own a Slo 100 and a X99/Sm100 power amp rig, although the two are meant to be the same circuitry the head sounds bigger. Any thoughts on this Peter?

 What kind of cleans do you want???! That combo makes one of the best cleans ever. One thing that it doesn't do as well as I wish it did is the very tight metal sound, but that's where Uberschall comes to rescue.

I doubt you will have Herbert goodness with a VHT power amp. That sweet cleans of Herbert become REALLY sweet when you get that power amp section up! Also it's painful to see how Herbert channel 2 is being underestimated in both - & + modes; makes me think that many Herbert users play it at bedroom levels only.

I want two clean tones... a warm & full-sounding Fender clean and a chimey, bell-like Vox clean.

You shouldn't have problems getting Fender clean out of XTC. As for Vox like cleans, well, get a Vox :D
Got an example of vox like cleans you are referring to?

Maybe more along the lines of Matchless. As for examples... if you've heard Luna Sea, that's it. If you haven't, I'm out of ideas.

As for the Bogner clean, I find that it's fairly useable but pales in comparison to the Custom Audio OD-100 that I was using earlier this summer. Sadly, it was an old standard model and the gain channel just didn't suit me at all. I bet the SE+ version would be perfect, so I'll get one at some point in the future. The thing about the Bogner clean is that it's not very full sounding and it's also not very versatile. It's got pretty much one sound and the pre-EQ and other swithes can nudge it in one direction or another and adjust the tonal subtleties but in the end, it is what it is.

So if I understand it right OD-100 cleans were able to sound like Bogner, Diezel & a couple of other brands of amps?

Well, they sounded better at any rate. I haven't played Diezel amps, but the cleans that I heard in clips didn't really impress me. I guess they have their niche in some style of music, but like many other people say, they sound very hi-fi (maybe a bit sterile?) to me.

At any rate, VH4 channel 3 is the only tone I'm REALLY interested in from Diezel, mosty for that that modern high-gain rhythm sound. Also, it might be useful for leads to contrast a Bogner lead tone. They can both dialed in to be smooth, but in totally different ways.

This VH4 clip is nice *_*

But so is this Bogner clip...

^Get'em all. That's the only solution.

If you want a Vox clean - get a Vox :) Through the years, I haven't really found any other solution. Will be costly, though :)

Eventually, yep. Right now it's gonna be an Axe FX. I'm going to do study abroad next year in Humboldt-Universität (Berlin) and Kansai Gaidai Daigaku (Osaka...ish) and can't really take an amp with me. Plus, I'm sick of shipping amps back and forth between home and college. It's not a really practical thing to own as a non-music student. :/

I have been asking you this for years. ;) I think you promised me the first at NAMM a few years ago, and then at Salwender. I am patiently waiting.
