Mics for Android ...i am not a spambot lol

Yo

anyone doing this?

I am looking for a way to capture in-room guitar recordings using my Android phone. It is actually a KeyOne Blackberry running Android 7.0. This wouldn't be for professional use or demos lol. No one is going to want to hear that - it is more for my own use and for fun and personal learning/practice/critique.

I see the Blue Microphones and Shure MV5. The Rode VideoMic looks ideal but I think my camera lens and 3.5m jack are too close together. So now thinking external mic would be best. Conversely, I could go with my USB-C but that limits the options. I play pretty loud so it needs to not clip. Loud heavy metal. I don't want cheap but I don't need anything in that $500 range so $100-$200 I think should get me something decent.

This would be a link to the stuff I'm looking at.

https://www.micreviews.com/guides/best- ... or-android

Also, it seems like most of these are condenser or directional - and I want something that will capture loud heavy music in-room.

PS: I guess I should rule out the Tascam and Zoom stuff. They are more designed for capturing in-room music right? Loud amps, drums, the whole deal? I can't seem to find one like that that captures video.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance,

i would just play a little quieter and use my phone cam if its just to hear yourself play then buy a mic and interface if you want to do it right. those things were cool in like 2004

I'm not answering you until you click on all the photos with cars in them. You are a spambot.

Jk. :) Not sure but interested as well. There has to be some bastard on here with experience in that arena.

I only have apple stuff because that’s what I have through my work but there are a decent amount of reasonably priced interfaces for Apple products - I would assume there are some out there for Android too?

I think Bubbastain (sp?) does a close mic setup to his phone for the videos he posts? And Dick Butter Nuts does “in the room” type videos with his phone. Maybe PM them and ask what types of phones / setups they’re using or if they have any ideas. :dunno: maybe I annoying or whatever but I’ve PM’d people on here and asked for direction with stuff and they usually reply

Thanks. The Metalcore'ish stuff I play can't really be played quietly :D

I have an SM57/interface that I use today but it doesn't do in-room and takes a while to set up. I want to just press a button to record and press a button to play back.

Further research is telling me there are not very many microphones for Android. More for Apple. Getting better.

Conversely, I could look at a Zoom H4 or whatever.

Bubbastain uses an IK Multimedia I-Rig. I think the one he uses has one mic input but I believe there is another I-rig that has two mic inputs. I had one of those for a few weeks but it was broken so I returned it. It was supposedly a "demo" but I suspect it was returned by the previous owner because it was defective.

Anyway, I use an old Zoom Q2HD. It has two built in condenser mics. I don't know about drums, but it can handle any of my amps running two cabs and I use quite a bit of volume. I've been talking about upgrading to a Zoom Q8 for about two years but never get around to it. That one has two mic inputs so I can make use of my 57 and ribbon mic.

I was just looking at the Rode VideoMic. It's only $40 so I might grab one just to try it. I would be pleasantly surprised if it can record without clipping.

I use my rode video mic and DSLR. I got an adapter for the video mic to fit on a mic stand and a 10' TRS female to male cord so I could place it in a different area. That's how I do some of my demo videos for some small builders.

FYI and full disclosure, it is solicited demoing and not my typical playing, but the builder does awesome work.

I use a Rode mic for singing on recordings and it is pretty nice, especially for the price!!

Cool. Being able to add in the SM57 would be a great feature.

Right now, I have to set up the mike. Connect it to my Line 6 UX1. Connect that to my laptop via USB. Fire up the Line 6 software. Fire up Audacity. Press play. And that's audio only.

I've fired up my recording laptop/Ableton Live/Roland Rubix recording interface maybe two times this year. I just don't see the point when I get 100x the response from my Zoom Q2HD youtube vids vs audio only soundcloud clips. Plus, the Zoom gets about 90% of what I am hearing in the room on a good day.

In addition, both the portable Zoom devices I mentioned as well as with the I-rig, you get audio and video. Video is poor on my Q2HD but the newer Zoom products are much better.

Your vids are good DBN. That's the idea here. Quick and in-room capture. I'll look into how much Zoom camera I can get for say $200-$250 and probably go that route. Can you pull off MP3s too or what format does it present to you?

The more I think about it the less I like the idea of relying on Android for something

Additionally I have a Blackberry KeyOne - which runs Android software. The thing does get flaky and runs out of system memory quickly so maybe having a standalone device is better anyway. Thanks!

I should also mention that the mic has up to 20 dB cut and my camera can shoot 4k. It's gonna cost a bit but for me it was the solution.

My setup can even cover a small bar show VERY well. Audio and camera are independent of each other from the cord and the mic stand adapter.

Thanks, much appreciated!

I forgot to mention another aspect of this which can be a huge PITA: video editing. My Zoom creates a WAV file (I'll have to double check that and if it's something different will let you know) which I drag and drop into my video editing software. I usually cut the beginning and end off each vid because there's nothing going on in those parts. That's about as deep as I get with editing.

Then I have to convert the Zoom/WAV file to something youtube will accept. Pretty sure I am converting it to mpeg 2, which is not the highest quality option out there. I use that format because my 10 year old software can't do any better. I've been reluctant to upgrade to a newer editing software program but the learning curve was a bitch and I don't want to go through that again. Eventually I will have to, as my software isn't compatible with Windows 10 so I've got an old PC that I use just for video editing.

^ so do you have to synch those before posting to YT? I want to avoid that.

No. That's part of the reason I went this route. For the demo videos, the playing goes through a TCRmE Wiretap which is a riff recorder kind of thing. I only do that so I can move the camera, tweak settings while on the video, etc. I can play straight in hassle free without the Wiretap.
