Hi
just got a g major 2 from e bay ,,, everything seems ok with it but when i put it in the fx loop (series ) the amp lost a bit of volume and bottom end , i also noticed the two level indicators did not move very much ,, i tried turning the amp up up but the input /output led's didnt move much more than a 1/4 . I checked the settings and it was set -6 db , changed that to 0 dp it was louder but when i unpluged the cables from the loop my volume increased and also an increase in bottom end and body to the sound . Any ideas ? cheers .

Checked anything else in the loop? My Gmajor does odd things like what you're describing, I have to be certain all of my settings on my Modular Amp pres are set the same or I get large variations of volume happening.

What type of loop? Could be phasing from adding dry to dry.

Is the I/O set to PRO or CONSUMER? For a 5150 loop you should set it to CONSUMER.

From TC Electronic:

Can I connect a G-Major in a Peavey 5150 effect loop ?

Answer: The Peavey 5150 or 5150mkII heads have hi-z effect loop (instrument level).

The G-Major inputs (low impedance) require line level signal. The impedance mismatch results in an insufficient level of signal in the G-Major input generating a high floor noise, and/or a too high level in the return of the 5150 which could cause some distortion.

so does that mean i am wasting my time using this with the peavey ? cheers

Doesn't the Consumer/Pro setting change the input level?

Could try ebtech line level shifter and see what happens.

I got other amps too but havnt had a chance to get to them , I will try change the pro setting on it and see how it go's , thanks

I used one in the loop of a 6505+/5150II with no problems. Definitely try it on the CONSUMER setting if it's on PRO.

In addition to setting it to consumer you need to adjust the input and output level knobs on the gmajor 2.

Also make sure to change the level of the patches they are set to -6 db to allow for volume boosting.

Hey Mark,

Sorry i never got back to you when you text me before, had a TON of work to get through and lost track of time.

Make sure that the Loop is set to 'Consumer' level setting and see how you get on.

Keep in mind the 5150 doesn't have a real FX Loop. It's simply a passive insert loop with no circuitry, purely just 2 jack sockets that break the signal between preamp and poweramp. So you might find the G-Major 2 just does not want to work with the 5150 FX Loop due to the design of the Loop.

A Passive insert Loop has no place in a guitar amp IMO.

However, if you wanted i could build you a pedal sized unit that you would plug into that 5150 FX Loop, and it will turn the 5150 Loop into a fully buffered FX Loop (similar in design to the Loop that i built into your Cali Mod, but using transistors instead of a tube).
That will make the G-Major 2 (OR any FX unit) work perfectly with the 5150 :)

Does it work like the mini mix 2 suhr ? And would that be in series or parallel . The peavey works ok with a dd3, no problem so I thought it might be just be the g major , I would like to use it with the extc or Marshall dsl . The Marshall has a loop level switch and I think the bogner likes + or is it - 4db fx loop level , so would I still use the major in consumer mode for those amps ? Cheers

Hey Mark,

No the MiniMix 2 is a Line Mixer that turns a series Loop into a Parallel Loop, it doesn't fix a bad Loop though. The unit i can build is a high quality FX Loop built into a pedal sized box, which you connect to your Peavey Loop. This unit has it's own Send/Return jacks that you would plug the FX into. It would be switchable between Series and Parallel.

The Marshall and the Bogner both have proper FX Loops (not passive Loops like the Peavey), so they will probably be fine with the G-Major 2. Use the PRO setting if your Loop is set to +4dB.

I don't know if the 5150III fx loop is the same but it works great in it.
First, as previously stated, make sure its on consumer.
Second, there is an external input volume knob on the face of the GM2 to the left of the unit. I set up all of my input volumes for each preset then I use this external knob to adjust the overall volume of the unit to match volume with or without the GM2 in the fx loop.
