Holy crap! I was over at Mark's place yesterday (He's been helping me with some switching/layout stuff on my amp) and played a couple of his crazy mods he had sitting around.

One of them was this old, completely point to point wired amp that he had modded. When I say point to point, I really mean it. No circuit board(s) at all, complete point to point wired. Anyway the thing has two massive power tubes (KT66 I think??) The friggin' amp is a fire breathing dragon - simply awesome heavy tones. I think Mark said it was around 60W. Tiny little amp, with massive tubes and transformers (100W transformers Mark said). I can't believe the sound coming out of this thing.

Mark said to take it home with me and check it out. I played it for hours last night with and without effects. What this guy can do with an amp is amazing. I love this damn thing. I normally prefer 100W amps, but this thing has incredible girth and bass response I don't normally associate with lower wattage amps. The thing also sounds great at extremely low volume...

Somebody should just be paying this guy to sit in a room and come up with crazy new amps. Somebody who can then convert his ideas into sustained production. I'm convinced it would be a great business...

I'll tell ya man - I don't want to give this thing back... The thing is ugly as hell, all beat up (two wood screws holding the amp into the headcase   ), but the tones are nuts...

Is that the Standell thing? :D If so, it's VERY cool. Kind of like the Custom 75.

Funny, Mark and I have an understanding; he's not getting the Custom 75 back until he builds me the same amp   Well......at least that's MY understanding

He's always got a bunch of wacky mods sitting around. "Ya wanna try this one?" Um... yes, yes I do...

He had a Wizard metal he modded and also some combo that was in a Mesa chassis that we played through a 4x12. That one sounded great too, but I preferred the Standell...

his mutants lay waste to most coveted hi gain amps out there.

The thing that is interesting is that these mutants as well as the CCV cover much more than Hi-gain. It's just that the clips everyone produces of these amps ARE high gain...
