but always end up with a Boss SD-1 as my fave   i got a few mods i like but stock is fine too. and its the cheapest one, will i ever learn haha

That is a really nice problem to have you weirdo.

Me too. Then I got the VFE Dragon and Standout and all of my other pedals have not been used in months.

I must have 50+ pedals with 1/2 being gain/overdrive pedals.

Hey, nothing wrong with that. A SD-1 into a good Marshall gets it done everytime.

hmmm vfe... would u be able to give a comparison of the dragon to the sd-1 say into a stock jcm800?

I do the same thing, and always go back to my Analogman Brown modded Maxon OD-9. First world guitar player problems...

Bone stock 1980 JMP 100Watt with 6550’s. Using a 4x12 loaded with Celestion any H30’s. Guitar is a Charvel loaded with a Suhr Aldrich pickup. Recorded with a simple iPhone.

thanks man those vfes sound wicked!

Really depends on the amp, they all react differently. SD-1 types with Marshall always, Green TS types with other amps like Mesa/5150 and so on. My ear is tired of the mid-hump those pedals give to my Marshall though, dates the sound to me ears now. I love my SD-1 but man everything I play is so mid-80s sounding...
Fortin Grind is my fave right now and it's not even an overdrive   clean boost with EQ is where it's at these days for a more modern sound.

The only issue I have with the 2 SD1's I have is the hiss...just a little much compared to my OD1X. But I still use both...1 is Taiwan and the other is from 86, MIJ...it does sound a little better than the MIT version. Both are a timeless classic though.

I have been going thru a bunch the last few years. I'm into a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 Version 2 and Fulldrive 3

These are variations of the Boss SD-1

Also really like a RAT with some amps.

All overdrive, boost, distortion and fuzz should have a HPF pot. It's so useful for controlling the interaction of various guitars and amps. Allowing you control of the speed of the attack.

Although a bit more notched in the mid, the stock SD-1 sounds like the winner to me here. Has a bit more sag.. the others have better definition but as I learned with the cusack (the other pedal you made sound killer), sometimes you want a bit more chewy give. It doesn't all have to be so tight and detailed. Right now, I am using one of the Klon derivatives and i think it is awesome.Feels like that extra gain stage for my jcm800.

He dial in more sag by turning back the HPF

I don't doubt that.. that's why I too must have like 30 overdrives in a milk crate here. I just think that if i always end up back at the source, might as well just stick with the original! My guilty pleasure is the OD-1 circuit. I have a japanese clone of that one and for thrash, nothing beats it for the aggressiveness. When you start cranking amps, the OD just adds a nice subtle coloration anyway. Be it 50$ or 300$, you don't hear too much difference when you consider that you will likely dial in the tone controls similarly in each pedal.
