I was going through my old photobucket and came across this old gem and wanted to share.

I don't know if any of you guys remember the Sub Camo run of 10 guitars a member of the JCF forum put together back in 06-07 time frame. Anyways old specs of George's Sub Camo were found and every detail was attempted to be recreated.

Then the CS screwed up and used regular to heavy weight alder instead of the correct and specified "lightwieght" alder. Some QC issues like major gaps in the neck pocket area between the neck and body. I know there was more issues but can't remember exactly all of them at the moment.

I know a lot of people backed out of their orders because of the body wood issue and Matt at Mattsmusic who was the dealer that made the run happen got stuck with most of the stock. He was selling them at a great price and that's when I swooped in and bought 8 of 10. I remember asking Matt to look at the guitars he had and to pick one out that has no neck gap issues or crooked routes.

He sent me this one. To this day it was one of the best playing guitars I ever had and I say this because loved the neck shape/countor, also if I remember right the neck was just bare wood exactly like the old Charvels. I have no idea why Charvel still to this day won't leave the necks almost raw like it did back in the day.

I unfortunately sold this one a few years ago. I wonder who has it today and also I wonder what this run is selling for now?

Fun fact, after this fiasco Charvel/Jackson stopped allowing "artist similar" custom shop orders.

I wanted in on that run... then I herd about the issues... I guess a few turned out with no issues.
There was a similar issue with the Dweezil green run too, no?

I wonder what happened to the rest of those because they're almost like the run that never was - they very rarely pop up either for sale, or even just people showing them off..

Awesome guitars! Shoulda never sold that one, man - and believe me, I know the feeling!

One fact I wanted to point out that gets overlooked, I know a few years ago someone was trying to remake this exact guitar and there was like a page long argument over what kind of wood it was made of... Most people said maple and I think one person said Northern Ash. The wood according to the records with Jackson/Charvel was lightweight alder.

Thus the controversy over the run in 2007 since they were made with "regular" alder not "light" alder.

agreed. still have the last from that run here. is perfect. no build or finish issues and a great player. happy to find this one many years ago. along with the offset ebony bullseye inlay cs charvel, it's one of the few plain maple board +maple neck cs charvels that currently remains among all solid oil body + oil neck exotic cs here.

had it since new. picked it up new via dealer, but not matt. funny acquisition story. knew the run and it's initial issues with some of them when they came out. there are a few out there via current known owners. as with many these days, usually quiet transfer / sell known person to person.

I'm trying to remember but could be wrong, I think there was more than 10 made. I'm pretty sure there was 14 maybe even as high as 20. I don't know if the run ended up being remade but I do remember a few dealers outside of Matt got these and if I remember they were not number 1-10 like the original run. If you look at the back of my old one you can see Dan Lawrence signed and number it 8/10

I love those guitars but you are right, impossible to find.

What a beauty that one is! You are very lucky to have owned it at one point.

I was one of the ones who dropped out of that run...the heavier wood was the dealbreaker. Then I was in on the green run that got cancelled.

For the record, Charvel didn't do raw maple necks on their builds, but you could buy an unfinished neck.
They used the same oil finish back in the day that they use now. After extensive play, it wears and feels like raw wood, but they didn't feel like that off the shelf.

Thanks for clarifying all the info.

Do you want to by chance sell 10/10?

All I know is most of the new Charvels 2002 to now have that "Fender finish" on the back of the neck, like most off the rack Fenders. It's like a satin finish that makes the neck almost feel plastic. The Sub Camo felt exactly like my old pointy and strathead Charvel necks.

Hi Rege :)

FWIW, my recent Performance has a satin neck. It's awesome. Very light finish. Smooth as silk.

Trace's used to be mine. I loved the paint but couldn't bond with the neck or live w/o a middle pickup. I later had Lee@GMW make me a similar with HSS. For whatever reasons, I always had tuning issues. Dumped that one too.

Still, it's my favorite graphic.
