Changed the Grillcloth on a 4x12!

I rec'd my 2nd Mojo 4x12 just before xmas. This one had a check grillcloth and I liked it much better than the all black mojo cab I rec'd a week or two earlier especially since they don't have nameplate/logos. So I decided to swap the grillcloth on the black one.

I had to remove the 17 screws on the back (the 16 around the edge and the one I added to the center post). I had to remove the speakers. I had to remove the 21 screws which hold on the baffle, but first I had to remove the handles (10 screws each) just so I could get to two of the baffle screws. Also - I couldn't use my drill because the screws were too close to the edge. Luckily I remembered a toy-like rachet set my looney brother bought me when an illness first attacked his brain. "Who's the crazy one now?" I must ask myself. It looks like a mini-drill, but is actually a rachet.

Also I had to remove two casters (4 screws each) to be able to remove the baffle.

Once i pulled out the baffle I came to realize there was 246 staples holding on the cloth. HOLY CUM-CRACK BATMAN!!! I didn't end up pulling out all the staples - only did that on one side and cut out the cloth on the other three sides and stapled over the edges with the new cloth.

All in all it took me about three hours. I will never do this again.

Yea - I like the the check better. If it had a logo I might have a different answer.

Looks nice! A couple of beers while you do it cant be that bad

Yes it is a real bitch. I could get the electric drill for the baffle. The cane Marshall style grill cloth is I think the hardest materal to work with. Just did one of the cabs Mojo f-ed up on on the salt and pepper. Here is what I did for the logos. You can get anything you want instead of drill out the holes for them I cut off the plastic dinks on the back of the logo and sand them down. Then use a drill and dill out where I want the screws to go. I usally follow where the it would have attached to the cab.
Did you have to put a screw in the 2x4 to keep the back from vibrating on it?

The first one I bought I put a screw in right away - w/out even listening to see if it needed it. I didn't on the second one and it doesn't seem like it needs it.

Looks good.

Should have just put the check cloth OVER the black cloth. By doing that a tiny bit of the highs are cut out (a good thing)... I actually have one cab like that.... salt and pepper under check cloth. I have even used 3 grill cloths at times. Not only does it cut highs... it helps protect speakers. I know people who have doubled up black cloths to help protect speakers.
I thought about just putting it over the black cloth, but for whatever reason I decided against it. If I ever do this again (and that's a great, big IF) I'll put it over the original cloth.

Dave because I didn't want to drill through the grill cloth with the wrong size drill bit and then fuck the cab up. I also could not figure out how to get the logo straight on the cab and drill the holes out. So I just just drilled out the logo and screw the fuckers to the cab. It is real brass screws thus giving me better tone.  :scared:

You can easily spread the cloth apart to be able to drill without hurting the cloth. Marshall even does this since if they were to drill a hole in the cloth, it might cause a fray. Getting the logo straight is as easy if you use a torpedo level and a tape measure. Push a logo through some paper to figure out where the holes line up. MEasure for the logo to be centered, hold up the paper to the cloth, transfer the holes to the cab, spread apart the cloth to drill the holes, apply the logo.

Where the f where you when I needed help doing this. :D I thought maybe Marshall drill the baffle before putting the grill cloth on. Well next time I will try doing that. Thanks dude!

Nice job on the recover, Peter...can be frustrating at times, I know. Looks great!

Someone mentioned adding additional cloth or 'doubling up'.....be careful doing that, because if the baffle already is a tight fit inside the cab, add more cloth, then the baffle may not be able to go into the cab. Now THAT'D be frustrating....

Very cool documentary Pete, this stuff works great too especially when you want to take a break, just flip the cab over.

Great idea. Does it come with a bucket of the Colonel?
