I've been playing for some years (just for fun) and am considered great (by non-players) and OK by most musicians. I generally play ballads, country rock, etc. I want to improve my playing and have been told that the only way I'll get better is if I practice and learn all the Pentatonic scales and the names of all the notes on the fretboard.

Anybody have an opinion?
