mailbox getting jammed with notifications

Go to your account / preferences.

Under "Email options":
Uncheck "Receive email when a new conversation message is received".

Under "Content options":
Uncheck "and receive email notifications". There are two of these; uncheck both.
 
Seems like it stills keeps sending notifications on the very first threads you posted in here after joining. You have to go to that threads and click "Stop following" to make it stop.
