Modelers suck

Well first, that’s because you only play through your modelers when you’re using your fleshlight in order to get to get the true ‘everything is fake but fuck it’ experience.

I think I adapted to modeling so easily because for nearly a decade prior to getting an AxeFX I was only singing in bands and teaching myself to record by helping my buddy in his studio recording bands, ALL the guitar I was playing/writing/hearing the majority of the time was coming through studio monitors, or I was fucking with mics in front of a cab to get an amp sounding good out of studio monitors. If I were in a room with a band, yeah, I’d absolutely want a tube amp in there (and ideally some way to capture a DI while doing so in case anything usable comes up) but for writing on my own in a DAW, I’ll take a modeler any day. And I will until I have a museum of amps already mic’d up and ready to go.

And I’m fully willing to concede that the context of this matters a lot, but it’s also why I give people shit for dismissing it. Yeah, a modeler isn’t going to recreate the feeling of standing in a room with a 4x12, it doesn’t change the way the laws of physics work. But can it make tones that are usable/inspiring to accomplish a final product? Of course, it’s been done for decades now. Dismissing it’s legitimacy as a tool is as dim as a contractor bitching about power tools because screwdrivers and hammers existed for years and did the job just fine.

I heard a ToneTalk earlier from 4 years ago where Friedman was dismissing modelers by saying it’s pointless to change pickups if you’re using a modeler because you won’t hear the difference. That’s not doing Dave any favors as someone who is to be ‘trusted’ with his ears, that’s more than demonstrably false and so many arguments against modelers are based off 10-15 year old arguments that no longer reflect reality.

When I got my first fleshlight .. sorry, I mean modeller... it would've been early 2000's. I only started playing guitar in 2004. Got a PodXTLive and a Pod 2.0 around that time, so I pretty much started out on modellers.

When I got my first proper valve amp - a Laney VH100R - I was in hogs heaven. Godamnit I love that amp just thinking about it!

It isn't that I don't use modellers or think they sound good. They do. Biggly. But I just feel I do my best work when I'm going old skool on it.

I have a massive schlong and use a POD bean

Modelers have their place, but it's amazing to me that none of the super modeler fans understand the underlying problem - if everyone switches to modelers, who's going to keep developing new amps and new sounds?

If modelers eat a big enough part of the market share, in the future, there is going to be LITERALLY nothing - except banal "modern" 5150/v30 tones and every boomers super special take on the brown sound

The tones for specialists like me are going to disappear - especially when it comes to modeler presets.

I think this brings up an interesting point. Maybe not one I whole heartedly prescribe to, but interesting to discuss; how many new amps and sounds are really coming out of tube amps these days?

It’s a wonderful time for tube amps for sure, more great builders than you can shake a stick at, but how many of them are truly innovative and pushing the medium forward compared to tweaking and refining existing circuits? If hypothetically all tube amp production stopped tomorrow, there would still be decades worth of new tones coming out with people just being creative with existing gear.

Now, as a tube lover and novice amp builder, I obviously see the value in tube amps and enjoy their tangibility, BUT I also don’t see a lot of stuff coming out that isn’t mostly a riff on a classic design.

Anyways as this video demonstrates, I think there is certainly room for both

I see modelers as a viable option for certain situations. I have a Splawn Quickrod and a 2204 build, I have two 4x12's I can use as well as a few 1x12's. The modelers may sound the same, but they don't give the same exact feel. But, now that I have an FM9T, I have something truly viable. I think I have learned to keep my presets and scenes as simple as possible and still have better tone than Joe blo with the Fender HRD and pedals. And, my rig is now simpler to set up and go....

I recently got a Synergy system. It is a cool, compact, all tube system.
which modules?

I sold my Engl E530 preamp and decided to keep my E850/100 power amp, now I'm in search of a preamp and new, the SYN-2 seems to be the best option. Been watching vids on the various modules and the two frontrunners currently are the 800 (for rhythm) and Vai ( for clean and lead).

edit: my concern is knowing me, I'll eventually end up buying many more modules than I need or will use simply because they exist. :bash:

I got the Syn2, and then got the Uberschall, IICP, Ultra Lead, 6505, and Powerball modules. I went a little crazy with the sale they had, lol. I think they all sound, and feel great.

yep, that's what will happen with me, can't just get two...

I think you mentioned the sales...I can wait for Memorial day. I'm trying to narrow it down to two modules at first. Doubt it will last!

Yeah, I started with 2, but then I liked them so much I figured I better get some more while I could, because I knew the next sale was going to be awhile. I was mostly interested in those 5, so I got them. I dont really see getting many more. I am kind of interested in the SLO and BE-DLX, but that would probably be it. I would be happy to stop there unless they release something new.

Speaking of modelers, I thought I would run the Syn2 through my Fractal units for effects, but I am not loving what the AD/DA converters are doing to the feel, so now I have my Axe FX going through a line mixer in parallel so I can still get the time effects and still have my analog dry through. The Syn2 has a very fast, snappy attack to it.

The Uber module is unreal. I liked it better than my actual Uber rev blue

I plan to run mine in 4CM with my HXFX, and use the HXFX for MIDI control of the Synergy preamp. Recently did this with my new JP-2C where I have an HXFX patch for each channel...still have to program the MIDI to switch the JP-2C channel.

I didn't notice any difference in feel, but I only added comp and chorus to the clean channel 1 before the send, and delay1 and delay2 after the return; channel 2 is dry rhythm so far, but I did add chorus and delay1 and delay2 after the return; channel 3 is lead, and I have comp, chorus phaser and flanger before the send, and chorus, delay 1, delay 2 after the return...I'll need to check again if the pre-send effects change the feel!

edit: I forgot, I also have a pitch shifter before the send on channels 1 (clean) and 3 (lead) to fatten/widen the tone. I didn't notice any change in feel...
