I just got through jamming for about 2 hours and it sounded awesome today :lol:

I guess I was going through a bad "ear" period. Sorry for getting everyone aroused :o
 
Good call!! Seems like everyone who gets rid of a Blackmore, regrets it and just buys another one!

So is the Blackie Engl's take on a modded marshall? I have an unexplainable fixation on a DSL...

It can do that type of tone, yes. It's got a ton of midrange, and it's a very bright amp.

I don't think so. I own a ton of Marshalls and a Blackmore. I love 'em both but the Blackmore is definitely more modern sounding. It does not have the upper mid roar of my Jubilee or 2205's. That being said, I have been using my Blackmore for just about everything since I got it 6 or so months ago...:D
 
What's the diff between it and the powerball? The PB had a spikey midrange that I could never dial out..

I have never played on a PB, but the Blackmore has a nice round midrange to it IMO. It can also be scooped pretty easily if need be. I run mine right around 11-12 o'clock. Not scooped but nice and fat.

The Powerball sounds really bad with any real amount of mids dialed in IMO, especially in focused mode. The Blackmore is WAY more natural sounding, has a much stronger and more present midrange voicing, less gain (but still more than enough for brutal death metal), better clean channel, clearer sounding, and smoother for leads. More crunch for rhythm stuff as well.

Jim,

The Powerball and Blackmore couldn't be any further apart IMO. Mega pretty much nailed it with his description. I am one who thinks the Blackmore is pretty damn close to a hot-rodded JCM800 type of amp. I had a Splawn Pro Mod for awhile and they are pretty similar. However, the Blackmore will do it at low/moderate volumes as well. While the Pro Mod would not. I would say the Blackmore has more gain as well. And a much better clean.

Troublehead....didn't you use to have a Fireball?? That doesn't sound anything like a Blackmore correct??

The Fireball is also completely different (but closer than the Powerball is to the Blackmore). In fact, I read somewhere that the Fireball's circuit is based loosely off the Blackmore. The Fireball IMO is like the Blackmore with extra gain/saturation and a bit less mids. Perfect for the extreme metal stuff. On the other hand, I found the Powerball to be too "processed" sounding and "round" instead of chunky.

The Fireball WILL NOT do the inbetween mid-gain stuff like the Blackmore. It always sounds like it wants to play death metal. I got closer by using lower gain pre-amp tubes. But the Blackmore still stomps it in the clean/mid-gain tones. I would give the Fireball the slight edge in the Metal department. (depending on what kind of metal you play).

Thanks for the description man........sounds like a killer amp.....that or Fireball still grace my gas list.....that or another Recto. I recently tried another Powerball a local dude was selling and didn't like it any better than when I sold it. It did have that roundness that you mentioned that bugged me particularly with the wierdness in harmonic overtones. I really remember liking the Fireball that I had......interesting that you say it's loosley based on the Blackmore as opposed to the PB...I always felt it was a rawer Powerball.....so now I'm really confused.......if the Blackmore has less buzz and less harsh mids...it sounds like it may be up my alley...but I do love the modern to extreme metal so... :?
 
The Blackmore does modern metal VERY well. Listen to the clips on Derek's site. They're by far the heaviest sounding clips he has on there IMO.

Clearer sounding is definitely a must for me......that and if it has that agressive ENGL vibe....

I would say the Fireball is still closer to the Powerball. Kind of like this;

Powerball...........Fireball..................................Blackmore

I agree, the Fireball is a rawer/grindier Powerball. But, the Blackmore has absolutely "zero" buzz.

I would say Fireball for extreme metal/death

Blackmore for stuff like Iced Earth, Hammerfall, etc....(i.e. more Marshally tones) and classic old school metal.
