Stay safe Florida brothers and sisters!

In 2005, I worked Hurricane Katrina the aftermarket, I did inspections I was in Gulf Port, PLEASE LEAVE THE AREA, I spoke to many who stayed and rode out Katrina.

Many lost their lives due to flooding from the storm surge.

PLEASE LEAVE OR GET TO HIGHER GROUND THAT CANNOT BE FLOODED.

prayers sent.

Best of luck all!

Didn't check today but yesterday they were saying this hurricane has one of the lowest air pressure readings at center in recorded history. 89x something millibars I forget.

My parents live in Tampa (Largo actually) but they are 1.5 miles inland and at 43ft off sea level. They feel they will be OK. We'll see. I volunteered to come down and help after Helene and they told me to stay the fuck away. I have a feeling I will be down there in the next 2 weeks or so regardless.

:(

My brother in law and his family moved to Ft Meyers several years ago and dealt with that last hurricane 2 years ago. They moved back to Illinois this year. I bet they are glad they did.

I know someone from up north who moved to Tampa and they're going to ride it out. Helene didn't hit their house so I guess they feel more confident.

I've ridden out a few hurricanes here, including two Cat 4 - with 12' storm surge, none that were coming directly at us.

The one time I did evacuate they would not let us return to our homes for 48 hours after the storm had passed to allow the DoT to inspect the road and bridges - while letting media, reporters and heavy equipment trucks to use the road. There was also a curfew, and if we were outside after dark we would be arrested; I slept in my car in Wendy's (private parking lot) that night, along with several other cars full of people trying to get back homes/businesses...never again.

I'm staying, and have stayed; unless a Cat 4+ is going to make landfall directly in our town; even then I may stay.

Living in Florida can let you get complacent because there are a lot of scares and false alarms that turn out to be just heavy thunderstorms and a short power outage.

But these things can be beasts if you’re in the wrong place. I mean relentless unforgiving beasts. In the Tampa area, Helene was nothing compared to this.

Probably. This is new for them though.

I think a lot of people 'felt' Helene and then also do not have a lot of direct experience with hurricanes - and are hence more confident.

Then you have people like my buddy @rsm who is staying for different reasons.
